NFCU - Trying to sign up using my Grandfathers service- Need Help.

So my grandfather passed before I was born. He was in the Army until 1947. My understanding was there was a loss of something like 80 percent of military records from that time frame. I was able to get his death certificate, how he was discharged, when he was discharged, SSN and stuff like that but nothing from offical from the government. I understand anything over 62 years old is public record. How would I go about requesting that? Is there a way to expedite it? I want to sign up for NFCU as part of my rebuild but fear they may require me to send in documentation I wont have. My mother passed when I was young and I am trying to get what information I can from my aunts and uncles but he passed 41 years ago.

DD214 form you can request and see if you can get records that way

But what you have may actually be enough, have you explained what you do have to a representative to see if that would be enough?!

@Anonymous, I highly suggest you call NFCU and speak to them.

My Dad had passed 20 years before I joined.

I was honest and told them where and when he served. Before I knew it, I was a Member.

I might be the odd ball here, but I actually prefer a face to face conversation. If you've got a branch near you, just walk in the door and say hello.

They are very helpful.

I woulda went to a branch when I joined, but the closest one was a two hour drive one way

It's not about working with someone. If they get audited, they need to provide proof that someone can be a member. If you don't have the proof, your accounts will be frozen until you can provide it, then closed if you can't

Never have read of anyone shut down by Navy, not saying it could'nt happen.

But read a whole lot more of AA and CLD's by other lenders.

They haven't had an audit in a while. The only recent closures being posted here were from people who went the roommate route.

NFCU used to have quite the reputation for freezing people's accounts. If you search for NFCU locked my account, NFCU security freeze, Navy Federal shutdown, NFCU membership verification, etc... lots of horror stories between 2013 and 2016. Seemed to fall off a cliff after that. They started allowing vets and family members of vets 2/2017, maybe that had something to do with looser enforcement. Or maybe it's just that NCUA hasn't been doing audits and a big enforcement round could show up any time. It's anyone's guess.

(To calculate this, take the current year and subtract 62.) Records of any veteran who separated from the military 62 (or more) years ago can be ordered by anyone for a copying fee (detailed below under “cost”). See Access to Military Records by the General Public for more details."

After 62 years, they become public record. If you want the record from before 1958 (2020 minus 62), you can get them without being next of kin.

I joined in 2018 much the same way. My grandfather was in the Army in 1945. He passed away in the late 50's, some 25 years before I was born. I applied for and was granted membership over the phone just by telling them what information I had. I have a copy of his enlistment form that I got from a genealogy site. I've never been asked to send it in or anything else. But I have that just in case I need it.
