BECU Credit Union Social Sec. Card requirement

DH trying to join and is being asked for utility and social security card... We can't find it anywhere, send global entry (no) send passport (no) provided mortgage, bank statements, pay stubs, driver license... NOTHING!

I'm like you can't get a passport without a social and it's a federal doc (Banks says I know but our policy, sorry!)

Frustrating as it is, I ran into the same thing last year.

Went to the Social Security office with many docs. to get a Copy of my SS card

I now even have a copy of my birth certificate.

To think, I have been given credit for 35 years without any past need of this

Pretty sure we have it somewhere and certainly we can get a new one just didn't plan on getting one just to join a credit union

I tried, could not replace online. Had to go in person. (maybe just California ..IDK)

When I got my last replacement I was living in one of the handful of states that doesn't offer online requests so I had to go the old-fashioned snail mail route. Even then it wasn't too bad, though.

@UncleB, I could not even get one snail mailed to me

It was only a two hour wait at the SS office.

Apparently in CA you can get SS Card online but even their website says "You should almost never need to show your card, institutions can verify your information with us online"!!

For what it is worth, I needed a replacement SSN card and they required a Certified Birth Certificate and an in person visit with a quiz (questions). It almost seemed like going to the dentist?

The SSA has a page online that details the number and types of documents you need to bring and what they consider as acceptable for each type. I remember going to the local SSA office and waiting 2 hours for a clerk then spending less than 5 minutes for him to confirm identity and process the request.

I'ts been a few years since I needed a replacement, but I downloaded Form SS-5 and attached a copy of my DL and mailed it to my local office.

The wording on the new form is ambiguous on if this is allowed any longer (it mentions copies of documents aren't acceptable, but this seems to be for new SS# requests, not replacements).

Further down it states that DL is accepted for identity, but I'm not sure too many people would be able (or willing) to be without their DL so that seems geared for in-person requests. Gotta love how the government makes things as clear as mud.

This discussion has made me very happy to know where my card is (for those few weird times it might be needed).

UPDATE:

Apparently in CA we can get social security cards mailed by request online... DH requested and it arrived in under 2 weeks, still time to submit to BECU under the original application... submitted and received an email 3 days later they had a few questions... on the phone currently, 37 minutes and they are asking if the social is a temporary copy or a new one... Basically, they are not liking the social security card that I sent them... Literally speechless but now we are fully in this rabbit hole!

Financial Crimes Department is concerned that he got the new social security card "to fast".

I'm like but it's the social security number you have already confirmed, why would it matter if he got it in 30 seconds or 5 years... it's just a card?!

so now we wait 24-48 hours for them to call!

He sent paystub, bank account, passport, global entry, and now social security card and still not satisfied.

Yep this sounds like the BECU I know. Next up - "we need you to come in to one of our branches so we can examine it in person." I admire your dedication to get through it. I gave up, got a refund from the foundation, and went elsewhere.
