NFCU -- Daughter of deceased former Army member from the 50s... does that count?

I would desparately love to get in with NFCU (along with the rest of FicoForums!).

My dad served in the Army for a few years following the Korean War -- never had a relationship with NFCU and he died back in 1996.

I don't have his discharge papers (though I have applied to get his DD-214.

Am I eligible even though I'm an old fart and my dad's service was over 1/2 a century ago?

Navy is known to have alternative way to verify eligibility, but DD-214 is good to have if they ask for it later. There are random audits. You're good to go!! Initial call takes approximately 15 minutes for setup. They usually just ask for arm of service your father served.

Yes, absolutely you can join. I had nearly the same situation - father in Navy in early 50s, passed away in 1993, never an NFCU member. I called them up and joined by phone. I have some documentation, and I have applied for his DD214 as well, but those are delayed a lot due to Covid. CS rep told me it was OK, they understood that it can take a while to get those, and that if their system didn't ask me for verification when she first added my info that it probably never will. I don't know if they have a database they cross-reference or not. It was certainly a very easy process to join though, and I'm glad I did. They've been life-changing for me.

UPDATE 2: Just got an email asking for photo of my driver's license and a document that shows my current address -- uploaded my document and a recent bank statement...

So *maybe* clearing 1 hurdle?

UPDATE 1:

Called up and they took my application. Then she said it has to go to further review.

she said it is "very common" but am worried because I had a CU that was closed with a balance owing from almost 5 years ago. I believe they reported to EWS so not feeling real optimistic.

if you get denied for EWS, can I reapply after the 5-year mark?

Yes, you are eligible. I too, am older and I had zero issues.

You are absolutely eligible. My grandfather served in WWII which allowed me to join NFCU.

They'll ask his branch of service, type of discharge(honorable, medical) and a few other things. Its been awhile since I joined.

Give them a call, you will not regret it.

UPDATE 3:

Called earlier today to ask if I had been denied yet (ever the optimist!) after submitting my verification documents and he said no, it was still pending.

have been checking my email like a monkey on crack today (even though he said it takes 3-5 business days... pssshawww- not going to let a little thing like that keep me from obsessing!)

just got the following email so cautiously optimistic that maybe I'm in????

Still no member number or links to sign in though.

(oh, and talked to my sister last night and she said she found Dad's discharge papers and will send me a copy so can even prove eligibility if asked!)

Ironically, I've always been jealous of my 2 cousins because they went to Anapolis -- little did I realize my dad tapping out morse code in Anchorage, AK in the 50s would make me just as qualified!
