List of most popular Banks by state 2020

This is an article from Bankrate.com.

The graphic defines popularity by # of bank branches as of Sept 2020.

At this very high level basic view, one could see that the new Truist would eye First Citizens Bank in South Carolina as a merger target.

Very interesting map! I wouldn't have guessed Citizen's for MA. And no Bank of America anywhere....

Yes, it is seemingly odd that BOA is not tops in any state such as Massachusetts given the state's banking history from the past 25 years.

I vaguely remember when BOA had acquired Fleet Boston Financial.

I do remember though when Fleet had consolidated two Boston area banks- Fleet Bank and BankBoston

Not much earlier than that, BankBoston was a merger between Baybanks and Bank of Boston. (I was an employee at BKB.)

That one caught me off guard (BofA) since BofA is headquartered here, but then I'm thinking that I see a lot more BB&T & Suntrust branches than BofA (there's only one I can think of for certain in my city).

Very interesting stuff. I live in Florida and I've never heard of Truist...doing a search in my Maps app yields no results. Central and Northern FL are basically a completely different state than SFL. I'm curious what the lower third of the state results would be. We have a wide variety of banks in this area. Chase and BoA are quite popular but we have a fair amount of TD, WF, Regions, and Space Coast Credit Union is also quite popular around here

I had Baybanks and then Bank of Boston during my college years. Haven't heard those names in a long time. Lol

Yes, my first US bank account (and US credit card) was from Baybank.

That particular metric is specific to the number of full services branches in each state without any factoring of assets under management.

As I have understood it, based upon assets under management from Massachusetts residents BoA is still #1.

Guess I don't need to open the article now that there are so many spoilers!!! 😛

My primary checking at BoA did the BankBoston to Fleet to BoA transition and my MBNA cards also went to BoA. For a while in the '00s I was just waiting for everything to eventually become Taco Bell. (Demolition Man reference; never did figure out the 3 seashells.)

Truist is a recent merger of SunTrust with BB&T both in the south east United States.

BoA hasn't had a huge footprint in the Boston area for years now. Santander's been vanishing, too. The new beast in town is Chase, popping up like weeds. I suspect it's going to overtake Citizens in a matter of a few years at this pace.

Edit: Significant was too far, as they do still have a lot of ATMs. Branches near where I am (Back Bay) are few and far between though, contrasted with Citizens/Chase which are fighting with coffee shops for filling all empty commercial spaces.
