I understand people getting excited about large COLA increases for Social Security ... but the only reason for them is inflation. Which means you are getting more money but you are also paying more to live.

So I'm not sure you come out ahead unless your spending is significantly different than what they use to calculate inflation.

I agree that it's unfortunate that COLA is going up due to inflation, but with how hard it's been for folks to get by, a large COLA increase will be helpful to so many who are really struggling right now. However, next year, if inflation stabilizes, then there will be minimal to no increase the following year.

SS COLAs are not based on the regular CPI but the CPI-W which is the wage index. Wages have been moving up quickly this year hence a larger COLA

@gdale6 wrote:

SS COLAs are not based on the regular CPI but the CPI-W which is the wage index. Wages have been moving up quickly this year hence a larger COLA

Not exactly. CPI-W is based on the prices urban wage earners pay for goods, not their wages. I read an article that suggested social security COLAS should probably use a different index since retirees don't spend the same as urban wage earners.

Regardless, here is what I found for a definition of CPI-W

The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) is a monthly measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban wage earners and clerical workers for a market basket of consumer goods and services.

Edit: spelling

I was sort of surprised that AARP was linked here. Have you ever read the comment section on an AARP article? You can hear and feel your brain cells dying as your eyes scan the idiocy. My comment was on AARP not any COLA speculation.

COLA is determined comparing the third quarter to same quarter prior year. Not at all representative of annual cost increases. It really doesn't matter as Medicare Part B takes the increase anyway.

If AARP is revered here as Amex is maybe I should comnet on other threads.
