LIVID with Chase…Accounts frozen pending closure

Two days ago I tried to deposit a large check with Chase. The check was from a prior employer who had consistently made direct deposits into the Chase account through 2/15 of this year.

They told me there would be a 9 day hold on the check, which I wasn't okay with.

Teller says "I can reverse your deposit without an issue and give the check back"

I said "please and thank you, 9 days is just too long, let me try to figure something else out".

Well I couldn't so I deposited the check via ATM.

This morning I woke up to a fraud letter in my account.

Call the number contained in the letter to sort it out .

Chase says "We can't verify that this was from your employer and intended for you. Your accounts will be closed on this date. You have no access to any of your money."

I said I'd like to speak with a supervisor please.

CSR said "NO!!" *click*

I am absolutely furious!!! I assume all accounts and cards will be closed.

Oh well...

TLDR;

Tried to deposit a really big, but legitimate, check, Chase froze all of my accounts and will be closing them.

According to them it's because they can't independently verify a phone number for a city government to confirm that the check is legitimate

That's terrible. Any way you could get into a branch to talk to them? Maybe get HR from your employer to call them?

I suggested a 3 way call so they could verify. They said no.

I said I'd give them the number.
They said no.

Its literally a matter of looking up City Hall and the name and state of the city.

HR resolved it and put a stop payment on the check and is wiring it to Wells Fargo who is expecting it and is more than happy to accept the large deposit.

They're still working but I'm not optimistic.

I've banked with Chase for 5 years and had

2 checking accounts

1 savings account

2 brokerage accounts

1 IRA

2 biz checking accounts

a CSR

and a Hyatt Card

In that 5 year period no less than 137 checks were direct deposited from the same employer.

I had to read this a couple of times. Understand why they didn't want to talk on the 3-way or take the number you gave them BUT closing your accounts that's weird. I was going to open a Chase checking, but maybe I will think about that one.....🤔🤔

@Rebuild2019 @I read the horror stories about Chase and still put too many eggs in their basket.

I had good experiences with them until this. I even had a CPC offer. They have great cards too.

I won't say don't do it, just make sure you leave yourself enough elsewhere too.

I also have an Amex Biz Plat, a Venture X, and Altitude Reserve so the hole isn't too large.

There are many people around this has happened to. Chase is super squirley about "potential fraud" it seems and when they allegedly detect what they think may be fraudulent they pull this stunt and refuse to discuss any further or reverse the situation. They for sure don't care about a loosing a customer.

We bank with them and Wells Fargo but I treat them for what they are, retail banks. They can accept my direct deposits, cash checks or money orders and dispense us some cash in the odd chance we need that but beyond that I do *Not* try nor want to build a relationship with them. The bulk of our money goes to our brokerages in various accounts and not with them.

Um...maybe I'm misunderstanding or misreading something here so forgive me. They told you it would be a 9-day wait. You said you couldn't wait that long. You then decided to deposit the check again into your Chase account at an ATM?

Sorry but there must be a lot more to this story. Chase is a top bank in the US for a reason. They have excellent customer service and products. I have a strong feeling there is a lot more to this story. Regardless, sorry you're having difficulties.

It was about 10am on a Tuesday and I was driving a gray Jeep. It was pretty nice out for February, maybe mid 40s, and the check was on a beige paper...

Oh and I really like strawberry protein shakes after the gym...

..and the "large check" and 9 days.. 9 days from talking to the teller or 9 business days?

There's definitely no solution to it when they won't even listen so it's mostly vent/information for others. I've not decided on the CFPB yet. I suppose it'll depend on the fate of my CSR/Hyatt cards though I immediately transferred the UR points to Bonvoy.

It was 7 business days, 9 calendar days, from talking to the teller. Was more surprised than anything based on the check being issued by an employer who's been paying me the entire time I've banked with Chase. They weren't even willing to release the first $5,525 per federal regulation. And yes the check was from a US Company and bank, a city government actually.

Those are the accounts that are currently open but they're frozen pending their closure.
