I had been using Capital One for banking for a few months and enjoyed the early direct deposit feature, and higher interest rates on my savings there. I also got a couple of WF credit limit increase denial letters that said that I haven't been keeping enough money in my Wells Fargo checking account, which I used as an excuse to leave - before they enticed me to stay with the early direct deposit.

My direct deposits on Wells Fargo show up earlier than they have on Capital One. I've also received a CLI from Wells Fargo a few weeks after I got a denial letter that gave low account balances as one of the reason for the denial. I got the CLI after I paid off the card's balance, and the increase was at or close to what I requested. It looked as if they simply granted my CLI request after I did what they wanted.

That seems to indicate that maybe they're using higher account balances as a reason to give CLIs when other factors aren't good enough, rather than using lower balances as a reason to deny CLIs when everything else looks good to them.

I'm still parking more of my money in Capital One HYSAs than I am at Wells Fargo, but the $300 bonus is a compelling reason to start a Wells Fargo checking account. Unless you're keeping around $8K in a WF checking account for a year, that bonus more than makes up for the interest you would have earned by keeping that money in a HYSA. Wells Fargo also have some very good cards now (Active Cash, Autograph, Bilt, Choice Hotels, etc.), and having some history with WF can increase one's odds in getting one of those cards.

I just asked for an increase last week on my Autograph and received the same answer you did as well. I have about $250 from my check deposited in my account every 2 weeks, I just recently changed it to $500 after the last pay period. I usually get the money in my account on Thursday. I usually don't leave anything outside of $5 in that account as Chase is my main FI.

I just noticed this tidbit on the last page of my August Wells Fargo checking account statement:

The primary reason I started using USAA years ago was getting direct deposits a day early and free ATM withdrawals, and with Wells Fargo now offering early availability I'm considering shifting my primary banking back to WF. Recently I've seen first-hand the limitations inherent with online-only banks such as USAA (a topic for another day, and a different thread) so this change with WF is very timely for me.

Some people will say "if getting your DD a day early is a show-stopper, you're doing it wrong" and that's fine, but for many the early availability is useful. In any case, this is definitely a change in the right direction.

They're big and well known, but more for credit cards than Internet banking (and their cafes don't seem to count as "branches").

Discover Bank does not charge most of the fees that Wells Fargo does. Plus, you receive 1% cash on your debit card purchases.

When I looked at my account, the available balance included the deposit. Maybe they're rolling it out in waves?

It also depends on when your employer transmits their payroll. With ADP for example, the employer can transmit just before 5pm (at least in Central time zone) and employees can still get paid the next day. In that situation, those paychecks will never be paid early as the bank will not know how much it is in advance.

My other FIs post around 11:30-12:30, but this is definitely early (payday is 31st).
