Naysayers? Those family members only have eligibility through those that served. We aren't just blowing smoke when its said the backdoor was closed. The actual requirements are clear as day as previously written. Always a possibilty Navy may still not accept a dishonorably discharged person even if they find a family member etc.Sort of like when Amex may deny a AU because that person is on blacklist.

Hello, I'm looking to join NFCU however I ha e a bad conduct discharge from the military, I called and they said only honorable discharge is eligible, however I've seen people mention a back door by donating to a fund or something, I'm assuming they're not going to run a background check, does anyone have a similar situation or know other ways in.

The backdoors have been closed for some time. To get in now you have to be active military, reserves, honorably discharged or a family member who was. I got in based on my father's service.

You can also be sponsored by someone in your household who is a member. They will ask for a copy of your ID/license showing the same address and a utility bill in your name showing your contribution to the household. In regards to the background check, they may not verify in much detail when you join, however, they have been known to conduct audits when you apply for credit products and will freeze your accounts if you are deemed ineligible after the fact.

Don't believe the naysayers! Navy Federal is way easier than USAA... they allow roommates while USAA does not:

Immediate family members of current members and those who are eligible for membership. Immediate family includes:

Grandparents

Parents

Spouses

Siblings

Children (including adopted and stepchildren)

Grandchildren

Household members

https://www.navyfederal.org/membership/become-a-member.php#become-a-member3

To join Navy FCU one does NOT have to be a "family member" just a "household member". People seem to get confused by that and suggest that it's a "loophole" that's "closed" which it is not. YMMV.

Good luck to the OP and let us know!

Edit: Also please note that all you need is a connection to a current member, not necessarily someone who has served. I did not serve, but my roommates are all eligible because we share a household. Which means essentially, it's open to anyone.

I don't see anybody being a naysayer. The OP talked about backdoor membership through joining an association. That was possible many years ago but that "backdoor" has undeniably been closed. The only way to get in now is through a family member or a member of your household. That was a good addition that someone may qualify based upon a roommates qualifications.

You can get in with a less than honorable discharge as long as you're connected to someone that is eligible. The list was posted earlier. And yes, your roommate can get you in as long as you're a contributing member of the household. That's how my co-worker got in. Was sponsored and showed hia part of the rent agreement and receipts.

They get upgraded sometimes with time it really depends on what you did. If this was something like UA where you basically quit your job then chances are it was upgraded possibly even to honorable. If you actually broke a civilian law then it may be different based on what the court martial charges were. You can get on the phone with the veterans administration and they can let you know your status and what benefits you still may be eligible for. I’m not in NFCU any longer, but I think if you ever had an account say while you where active, then you can get another one. I’m assuming you where Navy as you did not say.
