Just got this email from Cap One regarding my new DiscoNet debit card:

Helpful information to save for your next trip.

We want to make sure you have a seamless experience on your next trip. If you’re traveling internationally, here are a few things you can do to prepare.

BEFORE YOU GO:

• Research which payment methods are most common in your travel destination—acceptance may vary from before.

• Bring a second form of payment—cash or a credit card—just in case.

So, basically they are saying their debit cards don't work outside the US. Great.

In looking back ... American Express lived or died by the following motto: "... don't leave home without it, American Express ..."

Their commercials always included the above ... now they knew there were places Globally and at home that did not accept them but ... they were a more classy, higher tier card (based on their psycholgical marketing) and that was just a by-product of eliteness!

Today, their approach is different. As to their acceptance? Only MyFicoers know? I sure don't.

Well, they are AMERICAN Express. At least where it works is in their name. 😉

I just got the new card. I've never used the old card. I seldom do debit. When do debit, I use my Huntington card. I keep my fidelity card for oconus travel.

I'm going to close my Capone checking, I really have no use for it. I only opened it for the sub.

Capital One offered $250 for opening the account and making 20 debit transactions over $10. No direct deposit needed.

So I took that. But I'm also thinking about Huntington's $400 one for set up direct deposit and have a $1,000+ deposit within 90 days.

Credit card SUBs are nice but they're also limited. The worst thing about opening too many bank accounts is they watch for churn with SUBs but opening 2 I can sink.

When I opened capone, it was $350 and required two direct deposits.I made them as ach pushes from my amex checking, which I got a $250 sub from, using ach push from fidelity. Best was usb, got $500 by round robin cycling the same $5000 twice from fidelity to meet the $10,000 reqirement. Five weeks from account opening to collect sub.

I'm sub crazy!!!

Btw, the only places I've had amex turned down are great clips, Marcus cinema and Costco. I've used a master card debit at costco, never tried my amex debit there.

AmEx works at Marcus in Illinois.

But it's better to use a Capital One Savor for the Entertainment category.

Spot on ... until Capital One knits together the various pieces of the Diners Club/Discover Networks you have geographic franchisees that operate pieces of the network worldwide going back many years. Most unfortunate and BMO solved the dilema (2014) by running Diners Club and Carte Blance Cards on the Master Card Network which solved the problem for them (their idea of a work around).

What to say. This is old news but, for those Debit Capital One/Discover Card Member holders it may be new news!

Best of luck as a fix will not be easily put in place. In fact, some MyFicoers have reported when traveling worldwide that international merchants do not even know in some cases that they do have the DIners Club Merchant Option on their approval processing equipment.
