Navy Federal CU - The REAL way in for those that dont qualify.

The thread is locked and will remain on the forum for historical purposes, but this information is outdated and no longer applies.

I heard it from a few others offline. And had to verify it for myself, and its real. So here goes.

Not just joining the navy league, but joining the San Diego Chapter of the Navy League makes you eligible for membership into NFCU. Call for yourselves and verify. Thanks to the person that passed this info along.

And just to be clear.....ONLY ONLY ONLY the San Diego Chapter (which anyone, anywhere can join), qualifies you for membership. Not any other city's chapter. When signing up for the navy league, you must specify that you want to be added to the SD chapter. Its $25 to join. Then you HAVE TO print out the membership app from the NFCU site and hand write it up. Then you must either fax or email it to NFCU along with your confirmation email from navy league and copies of two forms of ID. The email address is membershipdocs@navyfederal.org

Takes about a week to process. You can call for status.

This is what everyone has been waiting for, and it works. Plus its noble donating to the navy league even if just for that one reason.

This method worked for me. I used it a few weeks ago, and did get in. Im so glad too. There was literally no other way to get in. Thank you to those that shared this. I cant believe its not more common knowledge.

just took the checking and savings so far. Havent apped for anything yet, but I want to do the cash rewards. My Scores are low because of high utilization, but once they update, they will come up. Then I'll app.

Joining is easy. Surviving the verification check a couple months after joining isn't so easy....

You would be correct if you used some dishonest way in. But this is completely legit. I called myself and spoke to a rep in the membership department. She verified that all this is completely correct. I took the gamble, and there were no issues getting in.

If you have your doubts, call and ask them if joining the San Diego Navy league qualifies you for membership. Then come back here and post what they said.

I tried joining this way by donating to the San Diego Navy League and sending a paper application to Navy Federal on May 10. On May 11 NFCU emailed to say they couldn't verify my invoice from the San Diego Navy League, and that they needed a credit card statement showing I really did pay them.

I provided my credit card statement on May 13 and again on May 17.

No word on whether my membership is approved or not yet. I will say their membership department doesn't seem to be on the ball. Altough it's probably a good sign that they wanted to verify my invoice, instead of just telling me outright I wasn't eligible.

Yeah I called the navy league before I did anything and they said they were like 3 weeks behind processing the membership apps. So if NFCU called them, they havent process your app yet Im sure. But I didnt even need that. I just sent over the confirmation email that navy league sent me showing I was paid and joined the SD chapter.

I deleted my info obviously, but this is what the confirmation email looked like. Its what I sent in along with my app.

Just gave it a shot. Didn't apply for any products -- just checking to see if I can join. As stated above the real test isn't joining but whether or not those who use this method can pass the eligiblity audit if encountered.

Be careful relying on that. Look at former threads (not just here but on other sites as well) on those have been shut down despite being told by a Navy rep that they were eligible. Do you have data points for those that have made it through an eligiblity audit after joining with this method?

I dont see the concern about eligibility. This is their rule. You are becoming a member of the group you need to be a part of, and they allow this. I really dont see an issue. Now if you said that some guy was your brother or you said you lived with someone you didnt, I would understand,

Whoops while joining the navy league, i only put san diego for the counsil, not san diego counsil is that going to be a problem? i just called in to try and join (trying to avoid the paper app at all costs) and their systems are down, said to call back in 1-2 hours.

You can call the navy league and tell them you want to be in the San Diego council. But as for navy federal and not doing a paper app, you absolutely have to do it in writing. They won't take apps for this method over the phone or online. It's just not possible. And they nfcu reps will tell you that.

Ah okay, should I call them before I fill out the app for NFCU? and have them resend a confirmation email? They just put this

I just hand wrote the navy league info next to the box where you specify membership eligibility. I also wrote on there "See attached email invoice from Navy League - San Diego Council".

Im sure you will be fine. This isnt the first time this has been done. NFCU is fully aware of this, and knows how to handle this process.

This method worked for me. I just got my welcome email.

I hope all the naysayers are wrong about the security review concerns! I wasn't questioned about this at all. Submitted my app as advised by the OP and was approved.

It worked. My membership was approved tonight.

I spoke with several supervisors in the verification and membership departments while this process was ongoing because I'm impatient and the paperapp takes forever. NFCU knows about this way to become a member, it's not underhanded. It's not a secret. You won't get shut down.

Now, I have to sign up for PenFed too because Navy League members are eligible there as well.
