Why buy a new car if you want cheap, you'll get a lot more for your dollar with something a few years old. I prefer to be the SECOND owner, as that seems to be the sweet spot in the car market, still in good shape but first owner took the biggest depreciation hit.

Anyway, whether you get new or used, the best places I know for car price information are www.edmunds.com and www.consumerreports.org

Edmunds is ad-supported, for much of the content on Consumer Reports unless you already subscribe to the print magazine you'll need to pay a fee but believe me it is worth paying for access to the Consumer Reports website.

Later in your shopping when you're looking at a particular car go to www.carfax.com where for a fee you can search the Vehicle Identification Number or VIN title history -- very important!

I need a car for function, and that's IT! I could care less about the "features" which are already overpriced. Does anyone know of any super cheap cars? Right now I am leaning toward a Hyundai Accent; it seems very affordable, good on gas, and safe. I'd appreciate any suggestions that someone can offer!

I have heard the KIA Rio is pretty cheap. Gets very good gas mileage too. I f you want to go the new car route. I suspect some big trucks and SUVs will be cheap as well. Leasing will keep cots down too if you can stay within the mileage and dont mind giving the car up at the end of the lease.

WE have a Kia Sephia (they dont' make them anymore) but it is very dependable and gets around 35 mpg on gas. It was not expensive back in 2001 when we bought it and they are some of the least expensive cars in general to purchase.

I'd defintiely recommend one to you. Their mini van typically comes in first in crash test ratings also,.

The Honda Fit starts at $12k no thrills with great gas mileage. Several other manufacturers have come out with similar cars in that price range this year....

Test drove the Toyota Yaris yesterday and absolutely loved it! I drove the Honda Fit on Saturday, but fyi, dealers really knocked up the price and they were really hard to deal with. I ended up leaving because I got so frustrated. MSRP for the FIT is $15270 and the dealers had a "dealer markup" of $18,600. So I went to Toyota and decided to try out the Yaris and it was a fun little car to drive. Who cares about the extra accessories! You don't need it. The base Yaris was priced at 12,790. Also, the Scion XD was very nice...similar to the Fit. Those are pure price so you can get one (and the standard features are fully loaded) at $15350.

Btw, consumerreports.org didn't like the Yaris all that much or the XD, but.....I find that they hate everything. It's not like you are going out racing the car.

Message Edited by vesper on 05-26-2008 10:07 AM

Always are useless and have a bias towards brands. The Yaris is a great car and if there is no markup, get one! I have worked on and driven manual trans. Has plenty or pep for the car, it is not a race car and magazines need to know this.

Has existed for a while, goes by the Vitz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Vitz

Message Edited by Sushi on 05-26-2008 02:54 PM

Message Edited by Sushi on 05-26-2008 02:54 PM

Message Edited by Sushi on 05-26-2008 02:55 PM
