I recently relocated from Maryland to SC for a better job opportunity. Everything is going well so far. I brought a 2015 Malibu in 2017...i never really wanted the car but I was in a situation where I needed a car so I didn't have any choice. Now I'm in a better financial situation so I will like to trade the car in for an Altima. I was approved for the vehicle at CarMax.

The problem is my registration from Maryland expired a couple weeks ago so I haven't been driving the car. I don't want to pay $300 to register my car in SC just to trade the car in. I never traded a car in before so please help me understand. If I pay to register my car now will I be able to transfer my plates and registration over to the new car without paying extra fees or will I have to pay the fees on the new car too?

Look into buying a temporary permit. This would allow you to register and legally drive the car for a certain period.

Each state differs. For instance, in my state (WA), we can be issued a temporary license permit, in lieu of full registration, to drive on public roads for three days.

Edit: Just realized this might not work since your Malibu was never registered in SC to begin with.

I don't see how you can avoid re-registering the car in SC in order to sell it.

Pretty sure the dealership can work this all out for you. They see this stuff all the time. Just ask them.

I've bought cars in PA when I lived in FL and in the NY/NJ/CT region people are always buying cars from states they don't live in.

Carmax can put dealer plates on the car and pick it up.

They've done it for me in VA.

EDIT: "dealer plates" previously said "temp plates"
