Hello again! My head has been spinning reading through the different credit unions recommended for an auto loan. I'm in between NFCU, DCU, or Penfed, and was wondering how the application process for those has been for y'all! Also if you have a recommendation based off of my eq of 755 and income of 55,000. Thank you!

Their process was the easiest I have ever been through. The whole entire process was done online and I had a check in the mail within a reasonal amount of time (keep in mind this was pre COVID-19). Thought I got a great rate at the time but I has read others getting superior rates from DCU. I signed up with them just this month and will wait until I have built a relationship with them to do any type of credit seeking with them. I am sure others with chime in on their experiences with the other two credit unions. I am sure with that score you should get the best possible rate.

@Anonymous welcome to the community!

Last week I applied for a used car loan at Navy. Didn't know what I was going to buy and so I asked for $30K just to cover my purchase. Instant approval, offered $30K and the opportunity to borrow $33K instead. I chose $30K including GAP. Paid for Priority Mail for the documents to arrive and had them in 3 days. I now have a check to shop at a dealer and Navy even gave me two free car-fax reports to help me shop.

I have until mid-June to use the draft. Pulled EQ 9 (730 at the time). No POI or other hoops. Easy-peasy.

Normally Penfed's rates are better. But lately Navy has been competitive. So go with the one that gives you the best rate.

A few days later I decided to try for the emergency loan ($5K, 24 months, 6%, deferred until July). Approved and no HP. I pay to monitor my reports through myFico and I would have had a notice by now. So perhaps they used the same HP?

I have found Navy to be awesome with questions. If you don't get a definitive here, consider calling to ask. Hold times on the 23rd for auto loans/questions were under 5 minutes! GL!

With navy, you should expect a hard pull for everything they do. Penfed has good rates for new cars but usually higher rates for used cars and longer terms. The great thing about DCU is they give you the same great rate for used cars, and the same rate for 36 months all the way out to 65 months. I bought a 2016 car In sept. 2017 and got 2.99% with DCU for 65 months, Penfed was going to be 1%/pt. higher as it was a used car.

I'll chime in a good experience with PenFed. I refinanced a vehicle in 2016 right after becoming a member at 1.99% APR for 24 months. The whole process was done online and completed just a few days after applying. It did strike me as odd that they had just given me an unsecured credit card, but yet when I refinanced the remaining $9,000 on a vehicle still valued at about $18,000 they asked for proof of income. 😂

A year into the loan, they sent me an email offering to extend the loan an additional 12 months at the same APR. I decided that extra cash each month could go toward paying down credit card debt and took them up on it. No changes to credit report other than loan term and monthly payment.

Their monthly autopay was easy to set up and worked like clockwork, even from my Bank of America checking account.

As mentioned earlier, PenFed usually has better rates than Navy but certainly shop around. Good luck!
