Hello All,

I am fairly new to the forums and this is my very first post. I filed for Bankruptcy on 6/4/2015 and I have just recently had my 341 creditors meeting on this past Monday, 8/3/2015. I have already started cleaning up my credit reports and have actually gotten some things removed and the rest updated to IIB with a $0.00 balance. There are only a few collection items that were not updated to IIB and two judgements that are still showing which I plan to push to have all of these things updated/deleted once I have my actual discharge paper. Well on my questions..

I signed my brother up for NFCU and he now has an active account with them which will be my way in with them...YAY. I would like to go ahead and apply for membership (not apply for any credit only apply for membership) well I am wondering when would be a good time to go online and do the application with them, should I wait until I have been discharged and everything has been updated on my credit report including the judgements ?

I am also wondering if anyone would know if NFCU will use Chex System, EWS or Telecheck ?

Thanks

I can't tell you if they use Check Systems or anything like that, but I can tell you I applied for membership before discharge and had no problems joining. Worth a shot.

I joined in October 2014, about two months after filing. I applied for an unsecured Cash Rewards card about two or three weeks after discharge and was approved for $500, haen't had any luck since. I've asked for a CLI a couple times and always shot down (due to BK....), auto loans haven't been approved the couple times I've tried. I'll give them some more time to realize how great it would be to have me as a customer, and then I'll try again.

$500.00 sounds great for a starter out the gate. I would have thought for sure they would have been a bit more generous with the CLI after establishing a few months of history with them. I see you will be coming up on your 1 year anniversary witth them soon I wonder if they will be more generous after that time.. Obviously they are missing out !!

I've been reading these posts for several years now and have learned so much in doing so. I filed chap 7on 5-11-15 and was discharged on 8-25-15. I joined NFCU yesterday and applied for their Platinum MasterCard directly after joining. I initially received a message stating that the decision process would take 3 - 5 days, so I assumed it was a decline. Well, I logged onto to my account this morning, and they approved me with a 1600.00 credit limit! So excited to start with such a large limit so fresh from being DC. I plan on keeps my utilization well below 10% and hope to see some serious gains in my cred score in the next year.

I joined 2 months ago, about 60 days post discharge and I got a $500 unsecured nRewards card with them right away. I now also have the Flagship signature with a $5000 credit limit. They will do what they can for you if they think its reasonable. If you have good income and use the cards responsibly over time they WILL reward you. I was very skeptical when I applied because I felt like with a BK7 no one would touch me; but I listened to the advice on the forum and they have taken very good care of me.

I dont think it is exactly typical to get this much credit so soon, but I had a good score considering recent bk7 and told them how I was in Canada a lot and wanted a card with no international transaction fees, and they gave me the Flagship Rewards Signature Visa card 3 months post DC. Even with the annual fee it has already saved me money in a couple of weeks. I was shocked that even the exchange rate is better with them than through the banks I use. I don't know if that'd work for everyone as my score was unusually high post dc (my fico 04 was 698 when I applied) but it goes to show they definitely listen to member concerns and try hard to accommodate them. I'm very happy with them.

congratulations q_thurst on your joining NFCU and also being approved for such a great starting limit... Reading your post really gives me some hope !! I just recently discharged on 9/10/15. I have already started using my NFCU account by setting up direct deposit of some of my payroll funds so that I can start saving with them but I have not applied for any credit with them at this time. I am excited to continue to save with NFCU and I think I will apply for my first card with them after about a month out from my recent discharge. I hope that I will have some awesome starting limit like the one you have recently received. I have heard such wonderul things about NFCU from this forum so I am very excited about my membership with them.

notpaul... I absolutely love NFCU and I think that they are an awesome company to do business with. I am still waiting a while to apply for any credit with them because I have just recently been discharged a few days ago from my ch. 7.. Once I can build my score up a bit and allow my credit reports to update I will be sure to apply for credit with them.. the $500 nrewards card was still a great amount to be approved for so soon after discharge.

@notpaul wrote:
I joined 2 months ago, about 60 days post discharge and I got a $500 unsecured nRewards card with them right away.

Good plan...make sure your credit reports are all correct. I had to do a maybe 2 or 3 disputes on mine. Some people have to do tons. I waited to apply for anything, even for credit one, until the disputes were corrected. It worked out for me. Keep at it!

NFCU has been great so far to me. The customer service is outstanding. I applied for membership, the cash rewards card and loc all same day a week after discharge. Was denied both the cc and loc, reconned both and was approved for $500 on the cc but still denied the loc. I had 2 inquires on TU and EQ for the membership and apps. My expierance id wait a little bit and clean up the reports and then apply for cc, if denied, send a message and see if they'll reverse it. Good luck!
