Why do they need my info?

A person that's living with me is filing chapter 7 bankruptcy, and their lawyer is asking for my bank statements and other info. Why? I'm not filing.

I would not give them any information other than maybe the rent payment.

Maybe sign a paper saying they pay X amount towards rent, etc.

You're roommate's bankruptcy shouldn't affect you unless your roommate owes money to you, in which case she or he can add you as a creditor and discharge the debt owed to you.They may want to see your part of what is paid for rent/mortgage and/or who's name is on the lease/mortgage.

If this person is just a friend, not a domestic partner, AND your finances are not co-mingled at all. Zero. Then I would not give them anything. Second, it sounds like your roommate may have told them they owe you money (either rent, or something small like utilities). Ask your roommate for the attorneys number and speak to them directly. You may be able to provide amounts owed in writing without turning over your finances.

And have a serious talk with your roommate. Bankruptcy is a long process with lots of paperwork and things seem to get mixed up often. In short, tell me to keep your name out of it.

I've lived with my boyfriend for 4 years and they didnt get any of his info. You need to refuse. If it's a lease or other kind of contract with the roommate that they want then write one up.

Probably wants to see if your room mate transfered any cash to you over the last few months - to basically hide assets.

They will have to figure that out based on the filer's records. I think the roommate misunderstood their attorney.
