I burned them as well. $3k on a credit card. From what I read, you can call them and make payments on the old debt. Once paid off, call them again and get the red label of death removed. Then wait a yr to get loan options again. Apparently you can get the secured card immediately of them removing that they took a loss. I fully intend on repaying them as well. I still use them for my daily banking. A few people said they had to fight a bit more. As in use their motto against them, to open back up post debt payment. You know, Once a member, always a member. I have only read one where they wouldn't let them repay, but it was almost a decade old debt by the time they tried

@ggmorning wrote:

Hi all,

So I've read numerous times on this forum that if NFCU is IIB, they will not even look at you unless you pay back the balance you burned them for.

I burned their green credit card (I believe it was the CashRewards) for something like 8K when I did my Ch. 7 BK. I am not proud of this and do regret it, it was a tough decision but I was in a tough situation.

I still have my checking and savings account with NFCU and recently put them back into active status after 3 or so years. When I spoke with them on the phone, they said that bankruptcy laws protect me and that I am still able to get their products even though I included them in bankruptcy. The representative didn't sound too sure of himself though with certain questions I had, and I know what I've read on here.

I think NFCU is a great credit union and I deeply regret burning them. I see all of the success stories with NFCU on these forums and I really do want to make it right with them when I am able. Is this hopeless? How do I even offer to pay them back or get started on something like that when it was discharged over 2.5 years ago? Should I just accept the mistake and move on or is there still hope?

Also, if you burn them with their credit card services, are you completely blacklisted with their other products like loans? (mortgage, car, personal, etc.)

Thank you!

.

Speaking frommy own experince I had an auto loan that was charged off in January 2019 for 19k. I paid them the full balance owed in December 2019 and they welcomed me back with open arms. They even gave me a SL of 15K on my cash rewards card with them. I would definitley pay them back in full.

Yes unless you willingly pay them back even though you are not obligated through BK protection, you will not get any credit cards or loans.

There is no way around it . Sometimes although always helpful and courteous, their reps can be incorrect.

Ok, that's what I thought I was reading. I have talked to 3 reps so far and they are all telling me I'm protected by BK law and that what you guys are referring to is if the BK is dismissed, not discharged. But they all pretty much have no experience with these kind of questions as it seems so I think they are just trying their best based off what they are reading. I even asked one of them, how can I go about paying back an amount that I owed to them even though it was discharged and they didn't seem to understand.

You may have to go straight to their bankruptcy dept. Normal reps wont have an idea. By the forums Ive read, they will know what you are trying to do. The normal reps wont have that info, all they understand is you are no longer required to pay and they cant collect. Thats where the bankruptcy dept comes in. They know they cant collect, but they know you can volutarirly pay and know why as well. It wont be their first rodeo. If that particular BK rep doesnt understand, go higher. They might be inexperienced.

Thanks for your help guys, I have officially made my first voluntary payment back to NFCU. It feels good to do right by them now that I am in a more stable financial situation, I sure hope once this is all paid off they notice my efforts and I am able to get more products with them again.

There are just too many banks and cu's out there to be worried about 'getting back in with' a particular lender like NFCU.

I burned them for about $37k.....

I don't ever plan on seeking credit from any bank/cu that I 'IIB'....the list is 35+ strong for me.

The NFCU ship has sailed. Move on to another.....all aboard!

Thanks for your input. What other CU's would you recommend? PenFed gave me a big fat NO the two times I have applied for them since 2017 discharge. I don't intend on applying for any more credit for AT LEAST a year, maybe 2. But was just curious which CU's you are a fan of?

Just in case there's any lingering confusion: I worked for NFCU about two years ago. The entire time I worked there (10 years), they would not extend credit to those who caused the credit union a loss and did not repay it (BK or otherwise).

While NFCU is a great credit union, I'd think long and hard before I paid back any bank or credit union more than $1k for a debt that was discharged in bankruptcy.

I dont see anything that nfcu can do for you that a local cu cant.

You may be tjoroughly disappointed after you pay nfcu back and they continue to deny you credit products...or their policy changes to permanent blacklist status for those that burned them.

I wouldnt feel so great about paying back a certain lender....what about the other banks you burned? Why the prejudice?

Good luck, nonetheless

I burned them for about $33k, I doubt I’ll be able to repay that anytime soon. I do regret it because their rates were great and they gave out the credit with ease. I’ve yet to find another bank who will even lend me decent rates, and I am 2 years out of BK with around a 700 on all 3 reports.

My current bank is chase, and they legit won’t give me any form of credit at all. I feel everyone’s results will vary.

Navy Federal tends to be better at rates than local CUs. Why, Navy has a far bigger client base vs a local CU. If you pay them back, you are not blacklisted. Just a one yr reseasoning period which is acceptable. Its not about prejudice, sometimes it can be as simple as sticking with the devil you know. With atleast Navy Fed, you know you will be eventually allowed to get products again. That is a gain, that isnt an option with other places. USAA, automatic 5 yrs. wait time. Burned them or not. For the average person, getting NFCU again is a perk. Simple as that.

Meh.....banks, cu's change their policies daily. I wouldn't risk paying back thousands to a bank in hopes of getting let back in. It's just not worth it IMO.

And yes, I realize the potential of the big boy CU's. I burned Navy for $37k + a repo....Penfed for about $34k.....DCU for about $8k....Wings CU for about $14k....USAA (not a CU i know) for about $26k.....GECU for about $9k.....Alliant CU for about $12k....+ 30 other banks.

What 'used to be' doesn't mean what 'will be'.

Simple as that.

And Navy Fed, seems to be pretty stable in that dept. Go back to prior posts across multiple yrs and peoples experiences with Navy Fed and voluntary payments all seem to be the same. Can they change their policies, sure. Any bank/CU can. If people want to pay them back, thats on us. If you have a beef on them for whatever reason, thats on you. Maybe someone wants to pay them back due to higher pay and their morality/ethics say they should despite it being charged off or discharged during a bankruptcy. No matter the reason, you just try to bring them down from trying to save a relationship with a creditor they enjoyed using. If they want to, let them. Its their call to do so. You may not be able to pay them back, but I only burned them for $3k. Easily done.
