Your first card after BK discharged????

I want to share my journey since my BK 7 was discharged in June 2024.

Credit Karma has been an amazing tool. Their Karma Guarantee gave me my first card after BK.

Ally Rewards MC with no AF SL$1,000. APR 29% The 3% rewards have added up. I use it for gas and groceries and pay it off every month.

I never thought I would get an unsecured card with no AF. It did take 3 months after to get this offer. I avoided applying for any card with fees..i.e Credit One which was all I was offered initially.

What was everyones first card after BK?

In chronological order...(doing this from memory....DC was 1/5/21)

APPROVALS -

7 days after DC -

1. OLLO MC $2500

2. Cap One Platinum $3000

30 days after DC -

Jasper MC $5000

60 days after DC -

1. BofA CCR Secured $5000

2. TB Bank Cash+ Secured $1500

90 days after DC -

Mercury Rewards MC $3000

120 days after DC -

Merrick Visa $2000

240 days after DC -

Cap One WM MC $2000

Then I gardened.

BofA and TD graduated 7-8 months after opening (9-10 months after DC).

My first card (a month and a half after my Ch 13 was discharge on July 29, 2024) was the Capital One Quicksilver with a $3000 SL.

@noonway Definitely an excellent card. I wish I had been offered the QS instead of the Platinum back then. I ended up getting offered a PC to the QS about 9 months later, but it would have been great getting it right away as you did.

I started right after my 341 on 7/23/24. I burned so many companies I was unsure of my options. I got a Surge card for $1000 no pre appoval just swung for the fence on this card. Yes it was full fees but it was a start. I was discharged on 9/25/24. Then I got the Mission Lane pre approved for $1500 no annual fee. I was able to get the Brightways+ pre appoved for $1000 no annual fee and at the same time I applied to Ally pre approved but they only gave me $300. I got my start now its garden and grow.

NFCU Secured - $500. Unsecured after 6 months and it's now sitting at $14.5K along with 2 other NFCU cards at $25K each.

After NFCU, went to Cap 1 QS

Then Discover Secured (no idea why, since I don't use it at all) - it's sitting at $1.5K

Then Apple Card (started at $4.5K - now at $16K)

Then I went over to Synchrony and got a Venmo and Paypal card.

Last was this year, got back in with AMEX.

Now I'm gardening for the next few years, until I can get in with either Chase or Citi - but I have almost $150K in CL - so really not necessary to add endless cards (but I will - b/c it's fun and interesting!)

My first approvals were:

Day one after my bankruptcy discharged:

PNC secured Visa

SCSCU secured Visa

Day 180:

SCSCU Visa unsecured

PNC secured Visa closed unable to get it unsecured

Apple Finance Visa

Barnes and Noble MC

Ring MC

Month 13:

Capital One Quicksilver Visa

Target store card(eventually upgraded to Target Mastercard)

Belk store card(graduated to Belk Mastercard)

Walmart store card(never graduated, but I didn't care due to rewards)

This may not be 100% correct because my bankruptcy was discharged February 29,2012.

If i recall correctly, DC was 7/2014

1st Card was Credit One- $300 9/2014

Cap 1 QS 3K 10/2014

NFCU Visa 1K 10/2014

I burned Cap 1 and was able to bypass the secured cards. Dumped Credit One before the AF was due.
