AmEx Popup on Login: You're Pre-Approved to Expand Your Membership

Recently had AmEx auto CLI my personal account twice in the last 6 months or so.

When I logged in this morning, I got this pop-up: You're Pre-Approved to Expand Your Membership This was in refernce for a business gold card, which I do own and run my own corporation.

Does anyone know if this is an actual pre-approval or just a fancy way of getting you to apply. LOL Not really interested in getting a hard pull, but if its a soft pull, I dont mind.

The terminology "expand your membership" is marketing for Amex.

In my experience, AmEx preapprovals are legit pre-approvals. I guess in this case it doesn't make a difference if you do not have a business to associate the card with anyhow but for what it's worth, you should be actually "pre-approved" for the offer!

While we couldn't predict whether or not you will or will not get a HP as a result of the preapproved invitation, you can make sure everything is locked and then apply. You'll learn if you were approved or declined and if declined as a result of them needing to perform the HP before proceeding, you can always chose to cancel the application at that time and let it go....no harm, no foul

I have received this popup for a second and recently a third Business Platinum card and it was indeed a pre-approval without a hard pull both times. I only have business cards with AMEX (as of today, six charge cards and four revolvers) and have had them since the since beginning of 2020. About the same time as the second offer (Oct/Nov 2021) I received an email offer for a second Business Gold and just today a third mail offer for another Business Gold which was also approved. I would say you are good to go without a hard pull.

Thank you. I can also confirm. I went ahead, applied and was approved, and it was indeed a soft pull. Excited to get started with AmEx Gold for the company. I generally use my CapOne business, but the line is so small to get anything done aside smaller recurring IT charges.
