So one big advantage to having business credit cards is to separate your business expenses from personal expenses and to hide the utilization from your personal credit reports. The very unfortunate flaw with capital one's line up of credit cards is that only the Spark 2% cash plus and the Venture X Business credit cards do not report to your personal credit profiles. Meaning that all of their other business credit cards will indeed report to your personal credit profiles which essentially does defeat the primary purpose of having a business credit card in my opinion.

Now , I believe many issuers require you to have your business open for at least one year before becoming eligible for a business credit card. However, you may be able to apply for one as a sole proprietor as if you are working for yourself as an independent contractor doing various sorts of gig work without having your business registered with the state government. This could be anything from arbitrage, to uber driving, or even building computers and selling them to people. Though these sorts of things may depend on the issuers so you may want to shop around and ask about this before you apply.

When it comes to the actual cards themselves as far as which ones to apply for, may we know what your primary spending categories will be? Perhaps you purchase a bunch of equipment and tools from Amazon and you could benefit from the Amazon business credit card. You may also want to first check with your bank or credit union that you have checking or savings accounts with.

Another strategy you may consider trying is applying for a secured business loan to help jump start your business and build credit.

Hello, I'm looking for some advice for business credit cards. I founded an LLC in May 2025, and through the LLC I primarily provide IT services. However, I also sell custom computer systems as a secondary form of income for the business as I enjoy building computers.

Currently I do not have any existing lines of business credit, mostly due to efforts to get the business on stable financial footing first. I do currently have 2 active personal credit cards with smaller limits. I did have a long period of high balances on the personal cards, but after paying those high balances I've been spending <=$300-$350 a month at maximum between the two cards.

Ideally I would like to apply for a business card within the next 4 months at the latest.

Current Personal Scores with source:
EX (Direct): 754
TU (C1 CreditWise): 762
EQ (MyFICO): 763

Current Personal Cards:
Colony Bank Platinum Visa (Elan Financial Services), opened December 2021 with $1500 limit
PayPal Credit (Synchrony), opened December 2022 with $2000 limit

Last recorded personal gross income was roughly $6000. LLC income is projected to be roughly $4000-$5000 before taxes for 2025, subject to change.

Additional notes:
I have recently received targeted mail offers from C1 for the Spark 2% Cash card and WF for the Signify Business Cash cards, which is what led to me wanting to find out more information.

On the personal side i mainly spend on dining and fuel, with a few streaming service subscriptions i put on the personal cards. On the LLC side the bulk of the expenses at this time are the parts for computer systems I build, then I have the internet service on auto-draft from the LLC account.

I do purchase a large portion of the parts for the computers I sell on Amazon, which would make the business Prime card an option, especially since I am an active prime member for personal and LLC. The LLC is a single-member comprised of just myself.

AMEX is a pretty easy business card to get based on personal credit all business major cards are going to be backed by a PG regardless. You can do the whole uline and whatever route under EIN if you have one or just go for Amex or WF's or US Bank or whatever using sole prop using SSN. Only concern I have is your low income last reported personal income. Business income isn't a factor usually though imho although personal income is to back it though. FICOs are good though. Worse case is a HP and best case is an approval

Apply for AMEX, one with no AF. Keep your business and personal separate. There are places to build credit, like stated above, Uline, Quill, to get the ball rolling. It takes time for business. Don't pay for D&B but apply for a number from them. It's free for just that.

I think the Amazon business prime card would be a great option for you then so I would definitely apply for that one. You would also be able to use it anywhere American Express is accepted, not just at amazon. While you're at it, you'd might as well apply for whatever other cards you might need as well such as wells fargo autograph for dining and fuel. And for the business side maybe even also consider the Amex Blue Business Cash, wells fargo signify, or one of the chase ink cards for the SUB.

I would also consider the business checking accounts with those guys as well if you don't have one already.

I would agree on the AMEX route. If you don't have a negative track record with them, its a good start and they are pretty lenient on new businesses. You could go with the Amazon Card or a simple Blue Business Cash as both have no AF

Two other options.....small companies that grant credit with a SP approval for you. Yes, it will be a Personal Guarantee but you shouldn't suffer a ton of HP's on your personal credit.

You can open an account with BH PhotoVideo. They sell tech that will help you....but as I'm sure you were aware...it's always best to shop around...sometimes they aren't the cheapest.

Second, you have a decent EQ score so another route is CreditKey. They will do an EQ SP to approve you and they just started issuing physical cards. (Note the posts earlier this week.) You can get an account with them, the physical card will be 1/2 of your total credit limit but they have some great 0% interest terms that would help you establish credit and may help you with cashflow. The physical card...actually a Debit Mastercard....works at any retailer...physical location or online.

Another vote for Amex.

They've been a very easy start for me over the last year, both with my sole prop and then with my LLC. One downside to LLC vs Sole Prop is that banks need more docs from LLCs and generally none from a Sole Prop. Some banks will scrutinize everything with a fine tooth comb, like US Bank asking me for lease agreements and sh1t. With Amex, everything was easy. I uploaded my LLC docs and instantly approved.

I opened an LLC checking account with PNC. I had to have an f-ing hour long zoom with the banker to get the account open where she asks me a bunch of questions and tries to sell me crap like web hosting.

Amex has been the opposite of that. Just easy. And lucrative with SUBs.

I found this quite interesting, too. Seems silly they have different standards for their cards, but I chalk that up to many banks still having antiquated IT systems. Note, I'm referring to Capital One.

I would try to get two or three cards now and then try to get two or three more business cards later in the year. It would be good to get credit established now and have sufficient credit cards/lines already built up as you will probably want to expand your business later on once it gets going. It's much easier to do that if you already have the credit handy.

Amex would definitely be a good place to start. After you get your first credit card, usually there's no more hard pulls to get any additional AMEX cards, as they are a soft pull after that. I currently have the Amex Amazon 5% card, the Business Plus and the Business Cash at Amex. After you have a little bit of business credit established, you can probably get a decent credit limit at Sam's Club and usually you do not have to personally guarantee their cards either. You can read about that by searching for Sam's Club in this forum. My first Sam's Club card credit limit started out at $12k and I usually asked for CLI's at around the 6 month mark.

Another one that has been REALLY good to me has been FNBO Bank. I have several of their credit cards, including the Business Evergreen card, which allows you to get a pre-approval using a soft credit pull at their website before you apply. When I first opened the Evergreen card back in MAY 2021, I was given a $15k credit limit to start, which was pretty generous back then. They will tell you the amount you are preapproved for when you go through that process.

There are many more good lines of credit/credit cards I could list but I listed some of my favorites, so I'll let you research the forum to find out what works well for you and your business. But if you have any questions at all, just post them and I or the fine folks here will reply. You will be glad you started doing all this now so that when it is time to grow your business, you will have the funding at the ready to do it. Just remember, It is always the easiest to borrow money when you don't need it! 🤣 Best of luck to you.
