Here's the story. This was my very first card that I got when I was 18. It started out at 300 or 500, and through the years (about 8), it has grown to $13,600.

However, because I used it so much in college -- thinking I was noble and not taking a lot of money from my parents -- it racked up a lot of money. As I approached the credit limit, they would always automatically bump it up. Like I said, it happened from a few hundred all the way to $13,600. It's currently classified as a Platinum Plus Mastercard.

Today, after reading tons and tons of info about BofA's generosity, I decided to give it a shot. I decided to shoot for $20,000, since I'm making more money now than the last time they got salary info from me. I figured, if I could get that, my utilization would almost instantly go to under 50% (it's currently at 64%).

Problem is, I have 2 30-day lates with BofA last year during a rough financial stretch for me. My APR increased a lot, but who could blame them? I hoped that it wouldn't make them think of me as a credit risk.

I filled out the info, shooting for $20K, and I was instantly approved for $18,700! I was pretty shocked, considering my scores and my past history. I guess they really value loyalty over there, since I've been with them the longest out of any card.

My utilization is hovering just over 50% now, and my scores will probably go up in a month after it goes under.

Needless to say, BofA has a customer for life! I wish I could smooch them. 3

Also, I did recently write them a GW letter about those late payments, explaining my hardships. I'm wondering now if their approval for the CLI might mean that they took it off the record? I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks if they send a response.

Congrats! BofA has been really generous with CLIs lately, even in this bad financial climate. I gotta say I love them.

And if you could forgive the tangent, I'd like to mention the saying "head over heels" never made any sense to me...

Yep, I have always thought it was an odd expression as well. From the link I posted above:

"'Head over heels' is a good example of how language can communicate meaning even when it makes no literal sense. After all, our head is normally over our heels. The phrase originated in the 14th century as 'heels over head', meaning doing a cartwheel or somersault."

Thanks cheddar. It certainly feels like a big deal to me =) Getting my utilization under 50% would have taken almost $3,000 of paying down balances (not including interest).

Now, I just need to pay about $400 to get under 50%! That's going to happen in approximately 3 days when I get my next pay check.

Message Edited by smoothjk on 07-22-2008 11:49 AM
