For Citi, make sure you don't have more than 6 inquiries in the last six months. When i applied for my cash+ they downsold me to their cash rewards card. I was able to PC after two months so that turned out ok. However with the carlson it's different: if you get downsold you get a much lower signup bonus and gwnerally a worse card but one still with an AF. So you can't just SD it until you can get it upgraded. I wish they would just reject you or at least ask if you want to be considered for the lesser version.
