Chase Sapphire Preferred upgrade - Thoughts???

So, I have had Chase Sapphire (regular) since mid-2009 and late last week sent an email to Chase cust serv about the CSP and what it would take to get it. Got the response this morning. Not sure if they will waive the AF the first year and if the bonuses being offered right now, which are:

Earn 40,000 bonus points when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $500 in travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate RewardsSM.
Earn 5,000 bonus points after you add the first authorized user and make a purchase in the first 3 months from account opening.

Not sure if I would get any of that since I am upgrading and not a new account. Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

i am almost 100% positive you have to do an fresh apply of csp to get those bonuses PC to it won't cut it.

I have known people who didnt get the annual fee waived and the bonus points after converting form the regular sapphire to the sapphire prefered. I think your best bet is to ring them and talk live. I think that is better than sending the secure email in my opinion. Keep us posted.

Thanks guys, I plan on doing that in the next hour or so. Got my fingers crossed. Otherwise, I still think it is a good deal for the upgrade. Thoughts?

Apply first for the Sapphire Preferred to get the bonus. If it is a NO-GO, then settle for the upgrade. All the best...

You will not get any bonus for doing an upgrade and you will be charged the annual fee, it will not be waived. For any offers you have to do a fresh application

Ok, got off my call a few mins early and called in just now. Last statement was correct. No bonus or AF waived if upgrading. To get that I would have to apply for the CSP as opposed to upgrading the regular Chase Sapphire card that I have. However, the lady was nice and she gave me the AF waived for one year, but could do nothing about the bonus points, which right now is 40,0000 points if you spend $4K in the first 3 months and an additioal 5,000 pts to add and AU and they charge something in the first 3 months. Suxs, but at least I did not leave empty handed, got AF waived for one year....so that is something...

yep csp isn't worth as much without signup bonus imo. you have to put crap ton of spending to make it worth it when AF kicks in imo

I just recently relocated from Houston, Tx to Washington DC this year, and right now I have too many HPs on my credit report: 1) New Home Loan from Discover - Sept 2) New car for me (traded in my old one) with AWD from Chase - Oct 3) New car for my wife (traded in old one) with AWD from PenFed - Sept 4) New Black Card Visa ( http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/Visa-Black-Card-who-s-got-one/m-p/3686646#M1009152) - December 5) Discover Mortgage transferred servicing to another company which did a HP - Dec 6) Home Depot, to get a credit limit increase did a HP - Oct 7) Ashley Furniture - Oct. All done in the last 3 months....MyFico is pegging it as "orange NOT GOOD" for new credit. So, I am thinking of gardening for awhile. I have a few HPs from 2013 that will fall off in Jan and Feb.

So... I got a snail mail regarding my CSP and the upcoming $95 AF - when I called to verify, the rep had me on hold for a few minutes... she apologized for taking to long but wanted to make sure she wasn't seeing things: I don't have an AF for this card for the life of it

I'm not sure how that happened either. I've had this card since 2007 and originally a Freedom. I upgraded to CSP this past December and applied for Ritz the day after. Not sure how they made that decision but I'm super happy for it! I just didn't want to ask any more questions for fear that they might reverse that decision.

Anyone have something similar?

Only other actions I've had with them was a recent roll-over IRA but a very small one at that.

I've never heard of that with Chase. You better double check your accounts and cards to make sure you have the product you think you do. Heh. If you pulled it off that is just awesome on soo many levels.

I think CSP is useless without the sign up bonus. I'll rather churn that card every 26 months. Chase does not have any transfer partners that are interesting with Korea airline MIA.

Some people would disagree with this. It depends on the travel partners you prefer.
