I am just wondering has anyone requested the card without the chip on the card that had a chip? I kind of want to get some of my cards chips removed lol...

Interesting, I'm the opposite and want all my cards to have EMVs. Probably not possible to have them issue you one without the chip but you can always ask.

You might be able to get a card without a chip, but I will bet every one of them will have a chip by the end of 2015. Even the most obscure CU, Discover just went over, CapOne is rolling them out, all the slow movers are getting ramped up.

And to echo the others, Why? For the majority of cards, they are only Chip + Signature anyway, so you won't notice any difference.

I seem to remember on some cards, for a while back, if you requested an EMV card there was a notification that it couldn't be "undone". But as others have said, banks will insist because of the liability shift, they need to provide cards as least as secure as the POS systems.

Some have but as stated above it won't matter with the pending liability shift.

Why? So you can be more vulnerable to counterfeit card fraud? It doesn't make much difference yet, but it will over the next few months. There's no reason at all to want the card to not have a chip.

Any bank that would honour a request like this would lose a lot of respect from me, it'd prove they just don't care at all.

While you joke many people believe this tracking conspiracy without taking two seconds to THINK. They can (and do) track you just as easily with a magnetic stripe card. Both still identify you and where you shop, after all.

You seriously think that the chip in US cards is just plain EMV? It has GPS + microphone+transmitter, mandated by the Patriot Act for the NSA (If you are not a terrorist you have nothing to fear). That's why it took so long for US Banks to roll it out. They know where you are and what you say, even if you never use it!

Ot so I heard from a friend whose nephew's dentist's cousin worked near the center that build the "special" chips.

If they want to find you they will unless you move completely off the grid (and don't get your own "Reality TV" show). Every web site you visit is recorded. Every email you send and receive is recorded. Every phone call you make. Every text message you send. Every Google search you do. Your cell phone gives your exact location. Your car either has or soon will have a GPS standard in it.

Who cares about an innoculous little chip in my credit card?

Why ??? Get some Cap1 cards - they do not have chip

edit: my Discover is now processing smoothly with the chip at a merchant overseas where the magnetic stripe got "unknown card" as a result

I know that Amex is one of them, once you go chip it's a done deal

I have read all the replies, it has nothing to do with tracking... or fraud lol I just want my card without a chip becasue it looks much better for some cards without the chip on the front thats all....

The bottom line is you are almost always being tracked anyway. Like someone said, emails, phone calls, texts, web visits, all of these things can be and are tracked. Don't assume that any of your activity is really private. It sucks but it is the truth. Someone can always figure out what you have been doing or where you are. This is the price we pay for the massive leaps in technology.

I'm in retail and it cracks me up a little bit when people don't want to sign up for a store loyalty (not credit) card that's free because of privacy. I respect you wanting to be private, but you shouldn't have a smartphone, use email, etc then. A loyalty card where they can see the type of products you buy is the LEAST of your concerns if you are really that worried about privacy! It sucks that so many stores require the loyalty card to get the sale prices, but nobody "owes" you a sale price. They give you the sale price in exchange for your data. I do think it is stupid and annoying, but you have to go along with it or shop at places who don't have loyalty cards.

You should assume anything you text, email, post here, whatever, is not really private and can be read by whoever is doing the tracking. Back when IM's were still a thing, it was revealed AOL was storing people's AIM conversations (which you have an option to "save", but I believe this was without people's consent). It is hardly new or surprising. You are always being tracked.

That phone in your pocket can already do that so you have nothing to worry about lol
