My DGF just acquired her first AMEX (other than being an AU on my accounts since 12/14). She put me on her card as an AU so that I could help with the minimum spend requirement. My AU card just reported and is being shown as opened since 12/14. My question is whether it should reflect 11/89 instead as that's when I became a member or is the 12/14 correct because I'm just an AU on that card? Hope that made sense

Currently, new cards that you are an AU on do not backdate. New cards where you are the basic member will, to the date of your first (basic or au) Amex.

So I think that is the confusion. AU cards ccount for the backdate target, but new AU cards don't get backdated

Ok. It just seems strange that my card says 'member since 2014' when that's not the case. I understand not giving MSDs of the primary member to AUs that have never had a card before but this is the exact opposite. I think

The card you have, as AU from DGF, needs to start from that 12/2014 date. I think it gets too circular otherwise.

To take the situation to the absurd, if circular AU MSD assignments were allowed, we'd have an incentive to all AU everyone else, until we found the "Adam & Eve" card holder with 1958 as the MSD, and then everyone on MyFICO would have an AMEX MSD of 1958.

Except that I already have a MSD of 1989. I'm not getting any advantage from being an AU on her card. If it was the other way around and I was asking to get her MSD of 1989 I would understand your comparison. In my simple mind, if I'm a member of AMEX since 1989, all cards in my name should reflect that. And whether I'm an AU or not, this card is in my name and reporting on my CRs as 2014.

I agree it doesn't seem particularly consistent but that really is because the whole backdating is pretty strange. If this was any other issuer, you would get the current date on every card. So basically, they give you an advantage in some situations but they make the rules.

And if they backdated, you would have an AAoA advantage from being an AU, right?
