is it just a rumor??? i hope so!!

My friend told me that a group of people who always purchased a lot stuff (high amount from lenovo, hp, dell and then resell those products) and used shopdiscover to earn cashback WITHOUT checking out by discover card got shut down by discover..

no notice was given, the limit became zero.. and all the cashback can't be redeemed anymore..

have anyone heard of this?? is this just a rumor or true.. i have always used shopdiscover without using their card to check out.. (i mean, the worst case i thought was just that not giving me that amount of cash back, no big deal.. but geting closed??? i am scared now.. )

I was under the impression you only got the 5% or whatever back if you paid with your Discover card...

Think they are referring to a different card then discover just using the portal.

Uups...I truly hope it is only a rumor as I am also among the ones that have used ShopDiscover in combination with other cards 😥

during the holiday seasons alot are 10%

those people that I talk about particularly crazy by purchasing dozens of (yes, DOZENS) laptops, desktops (each one would worth 300-900) and used shopdiscover, that would be thousands of cash back...

i know some people have been doing this for a long time, but it seems like this is the first time people got their accounts closed by discover

i am just not sure if whoever told me this told the whole story.. but i know that her bf's discover card was closed as well..

it seems like some people got closed before noon and when others were happy that they escape this fate, they found out later in the afternoon that their cards got closed too.. i had accumulated $1000 cash back bonus.. i just redeemed them all just in case they shut me down and i can't even redeem it..

I don't know why Discover would bother closing the accounts. I mean every time I make a ShopDiscover purchase (usually Harbor Freight for me) WITH my Discover card, I wait 8 weeks, and nothing ever shows up in my bonus totals. When I call Discover they claim I didn't use the ShopDiscover link even though I did. It would be much simpler for Discover to weasel out of it this way, and less negative publicity. If these were holiday season sales, nobody could even question it for another month or so.

I could see why this would annoy Discover, but I would have thought that if this were such a big issue to them, they would block the use of any other cards on their portal.

I wonder if the shutdown (if it is happening) is more for "perk abuse" than simply not using the discover card. Buying dozens of laptops could be construed as a business use of a personal card etc, so they may simply be unhappy with the volume.

Agreed. I thought about this and I dont think they would have the ability to do so. Once you follow through you're no longer on Discovers website so you can choose whatever payment methods the company has listed. Dont think there would be a way for Discover to block payment options on another companies website but I could be wrong. Who knows

that's how i feel.. i thought the worst is that i didn't meet the requirement ,so i dont get the rewards.. but never thought of being shut down..

It's quite possible. This was a loophole with NFCU member mall up until about a year ago. I came across it by accident and only did it a couple times for small purchases.

Then you should also prefer not to get 5% back Or at least expect that its not a guarantee bc thats clearly not how its supposed to work
