Chase UR Points to AA/US Air via BA

First of all, if any of you understood all of the acronyms in the title, CONGRATULATIONS - you're on this site too much.

Second of all - I'm planning a trip to the Carribean in the summer. I'm usually a huge United or Southwest flier but the flight I want is a U.S. Airways flight...is it true that I can transfer the UR points to British Airways and then to U.S. Air (or American) at a 1:1:1 ratio? Just want to make sure I'm using my amalgamation of points correctly without losing value.

You can transfer the UR to BA 1:1. You can't "transfer" the miles to AA miles, but you can use them, as with any alliance, for award travel on AA flights. BUt if you have say 30K AA miles, you cannot get to 40K by moving 10K Avios.

So if there is a 30,000 AA flight, I just transfer 30,000 points to BA and I can book the same flight?

No. You transfer your points to BA and then go to the BA website and input your search. If there are no flights on BA metal on that particular route (and there won't be if your route is from US to the carribean) then it will show you flights on partner flights. You can book those online on the BA website.

However, note that how many miles you use is decided by the BA award chart not by the AA award chart. The BA award chart is distance-based not region based like AA, so it might cost less or more miles depending on the exact distance flown.

BA and AA miles cannot be transferred to each other. UR and MR can both transfer to BA. Once you have miles in BA you can use the BA award chart to book on partner airlines. As the above poster mentioned the important thing to remember is that the BA mileage chart is used and not the AA mileage chart when booking with BA Avios even if the flight is a partner airline flight.

I love Avios because they are great for short flights. Avios might be good for carribean travel if you live somewhere in the East Coast. However, Avios will be a lot less efficient if booking from the West Coast.

BA for carribbean trips to east coast are pretty nice. For me flying from JFK to carribbean is between 20-25k RT on economy. Other airlines i think charge min 25k if not more.

st thomas for me was 20k grandcayman was 25k , i have been looking at bermuda actually thats 15k would be an nice weekend trip .

From DCA or BWI its 29,000 on econ with BA avios i think thats fairly reasonable you will have to fly us airways and stop in charlotte i think. Most other airlines are 35k so you get some fairly good value.

edit: oops i misread accourding to ba calculator its 10k each way with 5.60 in charges which is pretty good !!!

Sorry for the hand holding request, but could someone walk me through how to find the U.S. Air flights via the BA website? I searched for those flights but it showed no flights or partner flights available...

I guess the more important point being...I see a U.S. Air flight on Expedia that I'd love to book but it doesn't show up when I search via the British Airways website.

Go to executive club page. Click spend avios,select book flights with avios or something like that. Then input your details.

For this to work there must be award availability on US or AA or whatnot. Not all seas that can be bought with cash can be booked with points.

You can also look up on google flights or expedia or whatever for the flights you want. Write down the flight numbers, call in BA to see if theres availibility. They may charge you for doing it over the phone though. You can say that you couldn't find it on website , so they may not charge but who knows.
