So I got a First Premier mailer the other day and it said I was pre approved for $400. At this time last year, I honestly would have had to jump at the chance since my profile was in the dumps. It was just funny because they are now apparently issuing cards with chips. Just thought I would share that.

I got one in the mail yesterday from some place I've never even heard of before. I think they wanted $150/yr with a $50 activation fee and 29% interest. Like you, a year ago I might have been tempted!

In fact, with Discover, I believe EVERY major issuer in the US is now issuing chip cards (though only a few - like American Express - issue them on every card).

However, chip cards don't improve security much without merchants support, which is almost entirely missing in action.

The only retailer around here that supported the chip was walmart. It required you to put the card in the slot at the bottom. Then about 5 months ago, it all stopped in requiring it.

Walmart had a combination of technical issues and refusal to use the chip by the type of people who shop there. My understanding is that they will re-enable chip enforcement before October. You can use chip credit (but not debit) cards at Walmart. So you still should insert your card. At the least it keeps you from being skimmed there if they get breached. It also increases their chip use stats which could only help in convincing them consumers want it enabled.
