After getting my Ritz card I tried to setup my Ritz rewards login but it wasnt working so I called them. They helped me to get a login set up but my login is for Marriot Rewards not Ritz.

What is actually the difference? My undertanding is that you can only have one or the other but I assume for booking rooms its all the same.

Well Marriott International Inc. owns all Marriott properties and Ritz Carltons. It's just all the same company so they give you one member number.

The only difference between the marriott and ritz carlton rewards program is the promos they have.

If you're a ritz carlton member you'll get promos (megabonuses) that require staying at RC hotels.

If you're a marriott rewards member you'll get promos for staying at marriott hotels (which might include RC, I'm not sure)

If you're a member of one, you're a member of the other, and if you'd like to switch all you have to do is call and ask. If you stay at ritz's more often, get your account switched to a ritz account so you get the ritz promos

If you stay at marriott's more have a marriott account so that you get promos for marriotts.

Although members may elect to have their primary affiliation with either Marriott Rewards or The Ritz-Carlton Rewards, it is possible to change membership from one program to the other by contacting Guest Services.

So It only matter if you want to receive promo offer. So for both,to reach Gold status, you will need to stay 50,however elite benefit will vary depend on your decladed major program. Also, with the ritz card, you only need to spend 10k annually to reach gold. The Marriot card however will need 100k to earn Gold status. and.... Personally,i dont understand why Marriot doesnt combine both program so it's less confusing to consumer.

Can you book Ritz stays from your Marriot Rewards login?

Yes, I specifically looked at this earlier when someone else brought it up. I tested it right up to final confirmation.

Ok,so i research the subject. This is on Marriot web page:

No. Members may only have a primary relationship with only one program at a time.

How can you even tell what program you have a primary relationship with?

Usually by looking at your promos.

Doesn't really matter which you're a member of though. There isnt any distinguishable differences. I'm not even sure if the promos are different anymore.

Actual it is. So for example you register Ritz as primary, and a 50k bonus from marriott appear, you wont be able to participate in that promo, unless you open a new marriott account

Or switch to marriott primary and then call up and ask them to adjust your promo.

The only benefit of being ritz primary is the double elite night credits. All the marriott megabonus promos include RC hotels, so RC primary is bleh.

The two programs are completely interchangeable.

You can switch from one to the other at any time by calling them. For instance, switch it to Ritz during the season when they have the better promos, and back to Marriott during the time when they have the better offers.

Final note, to maximize rewards points harvesting, applying for the JPM Ritz bonus doesn't disqualify you for the Marriott bonus, while applying for the Marriott bonus will make you ineligible for the Ritz sign-up bonus.
