Discover it EMV question

About a month ago i called Discover to upgrade my Discover it card to the EVM version. CSR told me it would not be a good idea since a lot terminals are not taking it and it would take a long time to get it (about 30 days).. anyone out there already have this version and using it fine?

Thanks.. might call tonight and just order it once since for all. specially since im paying it all down tomorrow morning!

Requested it earlier this month and received it in a few days - no delay for me. Not that there's many places to use it though.

I dont have it. But as for terminals. Not sure what that is. But for me personally only a few businesses have emv chip technology when checking out currently. It wouldn't make a difference but you did get a emv chip and used it regularly. Not sure why a csr would deny the request and frown upon it.

Very weird. i will call tonight after work and get it. grrr. either way i wont be using it much.

I think I know what the CSR meant. Last month, I parked in a convention center parking garage, and when I tried to pay with my Discover (it has EMV), the machine rejected it as "illegal card". Even though the card also has a magnetic stripe, it seems that particular machine at least wouldn't read it as long as the EMV chip was present. I ended up paying with my Amex, which has no Chip, which went through just fine. This is potentially an issue, yes. But it's eventually going to fix itself.

I don't see the point in requesting an upgrade early unless you are going to be travelling internationally. As stated, the presence of an EMV chip is really not useful at this point in the US (later in the year it will be), since almost nowhere actually has the functionality turned on -- you still just slide your card regardless.

For the time being, an EMV chip in the US is not something I'd worry about rushing to get. It can cause problems with acceptance if the card happens to have an EMV chip (like yfan stated). There's no real upside at this point. I have yet to see any place actually accepting EMV chip cards. So, there's no harm in just waiting, IMO. Discover and other issuers are surely going to send you the chipped version in time for the liability shift which is still 8 months from now.

You like the look of the chip? I'm kind of indifferent. I feel like it just interrupts the design of a card. But I'm all for the security.

Point is, no point in rushing to upgrade because it is not useful (in the US) at this point.

When I lost my Chase Freedom card, I got a replacement that had a chip where the old one didn't. As said before, I haven't found a place that's useful for it, and may wear it out before I do, but it's nice if I ever decide to travel internationally.

I have just requested the EMV card myself, I know it won't be used for months, maybe even a year or so, but I just want to have it ready whenever it does come around, I mean it's free, why not? I kind of like the new design too, not that the old one was bad.

Yeah, I work in checkout at a grocery store, see lots of cards every day, have yet to see one of these, plenty of regular discover it cards, no EMV, I'm interested to see when thet start popping up

Are you sure they took Discover at all? That sounds like a terminal that is enabled for chip but not for chip Discover. Next is to try getting a chip Amex and seeing what happens. My guess is it'll work as a chip card. Make sure you insert and leave until prompted to remove like any chip card, or it could error from the partial read.

I've decided I'm in even less of a hurry for this that I was before. My mother and I ran a few errands yesterday and the stores that we went to didn't even like her EMV MC so I KNOW they won't be activated for Discover. I'll just wait until later in the year, enough time to possibly see a couple of these in the wild, before I request one - it's not like I'm going overseas and have an immediate need for a chip card and the adaptation in my area is slow indeed.

I have seen a handful of stores with EMV tech in place, but nowhere has it been activated/in use.

We're gonna be sliding our cards in the US for several months yet (roughly 8).

I agree with your assesment that it's not worth anyone's time to rush. Discover and your other issuers will send a chip card in time for when it is in use. Unless you plan on overseas travel it is not worth worrying about it. You'll have it when you need it.

It is expensive to use the Freedom internationally!
