I know that I've read here before that you can call Citi and ask for a CLI based on the original HP at some point after getting approved

Is the time to call right after approval or once you receive the card?

you create an account online and request CLI and it will instantly come back that it couldn't do it automatically but you can request review... more than likely it will be another hp but many successful in doing it and going much larger... like $4-$7k to $15-$25k limits! if they ask enough and don't chicken out!

Nothing wrong asking for more. I was approved a while ago for the Citi AA with $5K, I called to activate the card and I requested a CLI. The CSR transferred me to the UW, and approved me with for $18K,,, yes, everything is possible

I am still in $18K, I use it for travel expenses- around 5K a month and I pay in full. I would like to request at least $25K to match my other cards, but I will wait.

Go Ahead and request a CLI

From my experience, that's a really good CL for Citi, especially when starting out. I know in the past, they offered CLs without a HP, but I think they've stopped the practice about a year or so ago.

On my Double Cash my SL was $1,200. I called Citi the next day said I was approved for a Double Cash card and I wanted to go over the terms and conditions. The representative pulled my account with my ssn. After he went over that, I said I would like to request a CLI. He asked me few questions and said I will get my decision soon. I asked him if I could talk with an credit analyst for instant decision? He said sure let me transfer you. Analyst came on the phone and asked me few questions and said I can approve your request for $18,000. I thought that they were going to counter but they approved me for the whole amount. I should have asked for $25,000 lol.
