The only time I would have done the phone app was for Cash+ but the rep told me they could not accept with my zip. Otherwise I would prefer to type my info myself.....just seeing how many times my name gets spelt wrong keeps me away from such actions😉

Has anyone either applied for a credit card through the phone or at a branch? Was it a cumbersome experience? And for in branch, are the applicants usually writing all their info down on paper and then having the banker upload their responses to a computer?

I've worked at a top 10 bank, a larger community bank, and now a family owned bank (1.1B asset size). All have been the same essentially when it comes to CC apps. The banker is essentially going to be filling out the application for you, same as if you did it yourself online - although basic info will pre-fill if you bank there. The benefit can be the banker can lobby on your behalf if you're declined if there is justification to do so. Also, that banker and branch probably have a goal so you are helping them out. Larger banks can usually also run you to check for instant approval via a SP assuming they have captured your income info. At the major bank branch employees were trained to do this to all customers and it resulted in a large number of new CCs.

my dad applied for ink plus couple weeks ago, and also csp few days ago, he went into a branch to apply (because apparently applying online is like giving life away to hackers he thinks). each application took him about 5 min. total, and that's including branch managers and few other staff coming by to greet him. Since he's got personal and business account with chase, so only thing he had to tell them was which card he wanted to apply, all the informations were auto filled. only thing they asked/verified was social security. they printed out the sheet, he signed it. done. approved and he walked out the door.

I applied for my discover over the phone. Because I wanted to see which bureau they would pull. It took less than 5 mins. Then she said congrats. Welcome to the family. Was ez breezy.

All my info was taken over the phone; took a little longer than usual but not a big bother. The cumbersome part was when the rep started reading all the T&C. That probably took like 5 minutes, or maybe 10. Can't remember

In-person app - for my CU card - was relatively straightforward. It was my first card and I did it as a part of my first bank account opening process. The banker was helpful and because it was my first interaction with a financial institution in this country, I was more interested in the process and didn't really get bored or anything.

When I app for any of the B of A cards (6-7 months) I plan on going to the branch. They know me fairly well. Going to ask for a branch manager and make sure they have recon / credit anaylst in a top spot on speed dial before the app is submitted. Who knows if it will improve results. Not ready to try yet.

In my younger days, I very briefly had a job at an in-bound call center, whose main client was US Bank. So long before the days I even knew what F in FICO was, I was taking CC apps over the phone. Basically, it's no different from filling out an online application, the only difference being I'd have to read out all those T&C verbally, and at the end I'd try to upsell you on one of those pointless "payment protection" plans. I quit that job after 2 weeks.
