Hi everyone,

I am going back to school after several years in the workforce. I am considering applying for a student credit card - any suggestions? The one that caught my eye was AmEx Blue for Students. Is it difficult to obtain it? Do you know if it is easy to convert a student card to a regular one after graduation? What kind of credit limit could I expect to get with the scores somewhere in 730s-750s? Is it easy to to get a CLI while in school or are they generally cautions with students?

I currently have a BOA card with 18k limit and an annoying $19 annual fee that I would eventually like to ditch. I talked to several card specialists in BOA in the last few weeks trying to do a product change, but they would not let me do that. I assume that is because we recently closed our checking/savings accounts and disputed some monthly savings account fees that they charged us after the accounts were closed!

I also have a WaMu, Shell and Sears cards, and a car loan. No late payments or other baddies.

Many thanks!

I don't know how they are about switching people in and out of student cards, but you shouldn't have a problem obtaining one since you have several years of credit history and very good scores. The 18k BoA line is a nice size line and it may help Amex issue you a higher line, but I wouldn't expect an ultra high line on a student card. Amex is very catious with CLI's for new customers - especially in the current credit climate. Though they are possible, they sometimes trigger financial reviews and they may be hard to come by.

Goodluck! I think you have an excellent chance of getting one.

I agree with the previous post, you might want to check out citi MtVu. I considered Amex Blue for students, but found that coupled with my chase freedom, the citicard was more complementary than the AMEX for maximizing rewards. No matter how much I spend, I get 5% back for books and restaurants with my Citicard. Not so with Amex. I got a $7500 limit right off the bat with a 760 average credit score. Not sure how they are about converting after graduation, but they didn't mind that I was an older student who had worked and gone back to school. They did verify my enrollment though. (Also, not sure which they check as I haven't pulled my report since)

I don't disagree with the Citi remarks. However, if you are dead set on an Amex, I would recommend going after a regular Amex Blue. Rumor has it it is a tad more lenient than the student card.

This is assuming you have several years of credit history to go with the several years of work. If not, then I would definitely not recommend Amex. They will deny quick for a lack of revolving history.
