Capital One credit limit matching

Hi everyone!

I've been using this forum for advice for a couple months now and I just had a quick question about Capital One. I have three cards with them now, the Quicksilver - $3,000, a platinum prestige - $1,000, and a platinum $2,000. They are all fairly new (two months old), but I pay in full (got used to it from my American Express PRG). I wanted to know if I could ask them to match my other cards limits to my quicksilver and maybe a higher limit on the quicksilver? How would I go about asking them? Also how can I increase my chances for success? Thank you so much and sorry if these questions are dumb I'm new to credit entirely I'm only 18! xD

Hi there,

welcome to the forums!

Since the cards are fairly new you will have to wait atleast 6 months to get an auto CLI or ask for one.

but if you do it now you will most likely be told that the accounts are too new.

Since you only have had them fir a couple months, these cards may be part of the credit steps program which means you will get an increase in your limits for each of these cards after 6 months as long as you don't miss any payments.

I'm actually trying to do this right now. C1 had no problem PC'ing my Platinum to a Quicksilver, but wouldn't budge on a CLI because I got a tiny credit steps increase in September ($500 -> $750).

I've emailed the EO pleading my case for a CLI and am awaiting a response.

And Gaff, how long have you been a Capital one customer? Do they normally give such small increases? Both my platinum and platinum prestige are on the credit steps system.. I was really hoping for more than a couple hundred increase every six months.. I'm starting my own business and use the available credit every month and it'd just be nice to have a little extra so I could keep earning rewards.

Oh, and I had another question! Could I consolidate all of my credit onto just my Quicksilver?

I opened my Platinum in April 2014 (it was my first unsecured card), so the AF was fast approaching and I knew I wasn't going to pay an AF for a no-rewards card.

As I said, they PC'd me easily but wouldn't budge on the CLI. I've seen some people get large CLIs through credit steps, and I've seen them do piddly $250 increases like mine. They never actually notified me of the increase either, by regular mail or email. The first I knew about it was when CreditKarma emailed me to say there was a change on my credit report, and it was that $250 increase.

Afaik Capital One will not consolidate credit limits onto a single card, like Chase will..

Who did you call to ask for the CLI? I'm thinking about trying. Can't hurt right? Did they HP when you asked?

Capital One sounds very strict with their CLI. I was hoping my cards would grow with me as I grow my credit.. I applied for a chase freedom but was declined due to too many new accounts.

You can try first through the online system in your C1 account. There's an option in there to request a CLI. It told me I wasn't eligible due to already receiving a CLI through credit steps. I asked again when I was doing the online chat to PC my Platinum and was again told my account was ineligible for another CLI at this time.

Now I'm going through the Executive Office. I'm not allowed to post the email address here, but Google it and you will find it without issue. Apparently it's a good week or so for a reply; I'm still waiting after about four days.

Limits are granted based on credit and income. If one or more of those is limiting you then you may need to work on them. CLI's are not just granted in exhcange for time but creditors may have policies that restrict how often CLI's can be requested/granted. I'm not familiar specifically with Capital One though. Also, creditors do not simply match credit limits.

OP, I don't believe they do this, or will unless your spend inordinately exceeds your combined credit limits.

Nope just not going to happen! I have lived in the pain they call Cap1 for to long, least the existing ones can stay in my SD since they gave me CLI's and I will put a token 10 dollar charge every 3 to 6 months on them. My Next card will most likely be the Ritz either mid or end of year or a CU card. Dunno yet.. Have plenty of credit, just waiting for another juicy sign up bonus that is with a good creditor and a nice signup.. Maybe it will be the PRG 50k bonus? PRG+ED = great combo now that restraunts are included!

Did they ever get back to you? How long was the wait? I just emailed the EO tonight for recon.

Yes they did! Thank you for reminding me! The wait for a call was about 2-3 days, then after I spoke to my rep I had to wait for about a week while the analysts reviewed my information. They're really nice and helpful, they have me a $1,000 credit limit increase after only a couple months of having the account. I hope it works out for you!

I got a call back about a week later, by a polite lady who took all of my information. I asked for a CLI to $5k, but said I would accept a partial increase. About two days later my online account said my CL was now $2,000. I got a letter in the mail about two weeks after that, confirming it.
