USAA is a bank that was originally formed to service just officers of the US Army. Over the years that has changed to extend out to their immediate families, retired military, active military, etc.
They have changed or tweaked their eligibility at various times but some connection to the military is generally required.
Many on this forum like them (myself included) , others don't for various reasons.
They often get mistaken for a CU because they operate in a very similar way, more so than a traditional bank.

Jax
App free for 13 days since 3rd NASA denial.

Just FYI... I know some people have posted here about "missing the window" for USAA eligibility, and therefore losing out on their credit card products.

As of today, they have a much wider window of eligibility, including ANY retiree of the military, discharged after 1996, or widows of military.

Link: https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_utils/McStaticPages?key=2008_08_CEO_Share&order=1,7000&offerName=pubHomeBnr1_eligibility08

They told me they pull from Equifax, I asked. I took the chance of applying for a credit card. Last year this time my scores were like 530's for all three. I started working relentlessly to rebuild my credit paying everything off, and making sure everything was paid on time, i.e. student loans, car payments, etc. There were things on my cr that shouldn't have been there or should have been deleted and I disputed to have them removed. My credit scores are now 698 EQ, 677 EX and 655 TU.

I applied for the card knowing I would be denied. My Fico stated that I needed to show some sort of revolving credit and this would overall improve my scores more. I applied and was amazed, astonished that I was approved for 10K. My EQ did take a dive from 698 to 698. My question: Eventually will my score go back up?

I am proud of myself, and promise that I will honor my credit!

Rewards structure and CLI on cards. You might want to look at that if you are considering this CU.

I hadn't heard this before. What do they do differently? And is it current active duty vs everything else, or active and former military vs everything else, or what exactly?

According to them, I've been a member for 29 years, which means since I was 24 or so and no longer a dependent. But I would have been on my dad's auto insurance, and he had been active duty, so if I'm in some sort of category, I have no clue what it might be, lol.

There is an entire thread over at CB on USAA.
