It's up to each and every gas station how much the hold amount will be, regardless of what type of card is used. My experience has been as low as $50, and as high as $175

just another reason to be thankful to be out of the subprime range of cards, take a trip accross the state, 2x $175 pre-auths, a stop at a diner for lunch, and your way over your $300 limit.

Rental car hold. plus topping off the tank on the way back to the rental car place, and your maxed out again...

Wouldn't it be easier to go inside and pre-pay for your gas? Wouldn't that eschew the hold?

AMEX in particular wants you to use pay at the pump to get Gasoline level rewards especially on the BCP card.

They don't do that with my Costco Amex card.

really depends on the gas station you go to, the ones along the highway or in higher crime areas are more likely place holds on the card, that only show up in pending transactions in a day or two they disapear or get turned into actual charges.

My verifiication charged disiparred immieditly. The actual gas charge was in pending purchases 20 minutes later. amex is pretty fast.

The biggest problem I have had is not allowing me to fill my tanks with one swipe. I have never seen anything other then a $1 preauth and stations will vary from $75 per swipe to $150 per swipe and some even vary based on the card I swipe. But the $75 ones can be a pain, my vehicle holds 44 gallons of deisel and the boat holds 55 gallons of gas, so when I am filling both it is often 4 swipes. I have had to call the cards I use for fuel several times and get them to release fraud holds on the account because of this.

Ouch :/ Maybe going inside and putting the amount of 3 authorizations and swiping the last could make it a bit easier?

I've only faced the $99 / $100 hold issue with AMEX.

Now I exclusively use Sallie Mae to fill up. There's never any hold and the only charge showing is exactly what I incurred at the pump, as temporary transaction.

Does AMEX act differently than other cards or is something there that I'm missing?

Are you saying there is a $100 hold with AMEX, but if you use a different card at the same exact gas station, there isn't a hold?

If that's the case, it could be how their proccesor handles different CC networks. It may post authorize MC network cards, but only pre authorize AMEX cards.

Gulf put $90 on mine and I kinda freaked out a little at first. It was only a $10 gas purchase. Enough to spook me for sure.
