Best Travel Card

I'm currently hanging out in the garden, but would like to apply for a travel card in about 6 month-1 year. What is currently the best travel card? I don't travel often for business, but would be making a few trips across the country, maybe one ever 2-3 months. Just wondering what you guys think is the best and what they offer.

In that case I would Go with the Barclays Arrival+ $89 AF is waived for the first year .

Most cards that are considered "really good travel cards" have AFs.

If you don't want an AF maybe just a Double Cash. 2% on everything, redeem towards whatever you want. Someone suggested Arrival+ and as usual I just don't get it. It's merely a restricted 2.2% with an AF. But to each their own.

Also, consider that you don't plan to app for 6 months to a year. Something new may very well come out by then that eclipses current options, so make sure you look into it later down the line as well.

You might consider the AMEX Hilton HHonors card, the no AF version. Hilton points are the reward, it earns 5 points for Restaurants, Gas and Groceries, so it looks like 2.5% earning rate. 3 points for other spend, so 1.5% for everything else. And, if you stay at the wide range of potential Hilton (Hilton Garden Inn, Doubletree, Hampton, etc) the stays earn more points.

There is a FTF but it sounds like you might not be going overseas anyway. If so, then you can complement it with a Quicksilver for no AF, no FTF.

I know most of the good travel cards have AF. As I said, I don't plan on having to travel that often, mainly for about 4-5 conventions a year and maybe a family vacation. So I don't want an AF that won't cover itself in benefits. That's why I said not a high one.

I will definitely be keeping an eye out for any new cards and will probably ask this question again in about a year.

@Nixon: Overnighter's Club card? What's that?

Citi Premier
%3 on all travel including gas.
And gives you %2 back on dining and entertainment while your out and about. $95.00 af. Think it's worth it.
The Citi Prestige is out of this world if you want hang with the af.

Maybe a CSP? I've read that the travel category is fairly broad, also dont you get 2X points on dining? If that doesnt work maybe a PRG, 2X gas, dining and 3X flights.

Amex travel website usually costs more than other options out there. I don't get it, you are actually paying more in order to get the extra points. Not worth it!
