I would like to hear from some of your experiences with Credit Unions and their credit cards. Which ones have great offers, benefits and customer service. Which do better CLI's, etc.

I have DCU and love it, but curious on which other CU's are great as well.

Also how hard it would be to be approved to join

Thanks in advanced!!

What are your Fico scores, AAOA and # of inqs? Judging by your siggy, you are either new to credit or rebuilding with some baddies on your reports.

If you are rebuilding I would suggest joining your local credit union. Being able to sit down and discuss your situation and needs with them has, in my experience, very much worked to my advantage. In April I was able to do this with my local credit union and they approved me for an unsecured Visa with a SL of $2000. My score at the time was 589 on TU 04 version. Just last week the gave me a CLI and my CL is now $5000. I'm definitely an advocate of going local for rebuilders.

You need to make sure any credit union you join issues their own credit cards and that the underwriting is done by their loan committee and not farmed out to a 3rd party lender.

Many credit unions use Elan Financial, a subsidiary of US Bank and they royally suck and have conservative guidelines for credit card issuance.

I could do the one time donation even though it's non-refundable and isnt guaranteed approval. Not sure what is close to that with a better chance of getting approved. I have quite a few INQ on my report.

I tried PenFed last September, got joined up with the savings account, had to re-apply with a second HP over a month later after figuring out they really wern't processing my CC app, and then got denied for the unsecured CC, due to high balances. So I had them use the existing HP to give me a secured card, $500 based on savings, and they say that after a year they may be able to get an unsecured card. Whether that means this card converts, or I have to app for a new card, I'm not sure, and I'm not even sure I would app separately for a new card from them, but there you go: If you don't get an unsecured card, you should be able to transition immediately into a secured card to start building that relationship.

The other good choice is SDFCU, State Department FCU. I just went through them specifically for the no HP secured card, easy as pie (except for keeping track of all the log in screens and security verification steps involved). Another no-AF, no FTF, lower interest rate card with a bit of a rewards structure, though probably not too much of that.
