Bad news for Sallie Mae Cardholders wanting a second card

Having gotten my first Sallie Mae MC in November 2014, I applied online for a second Sallie Mae MasterCard on May 20th and received an instant denial. And when I say instant, I mean it took my computer barely a fraction of a second to make a decision. I then received a letter today in the mail saying that my card was denied due to having established "the maximum allowable number of this product with us."

Seeing as we've had members get a second Sallie Mae MasterCard within as little as a month ago (I'm looking at you HeavenlyFlower!), this was clearly a very recent change, which is very sad. My days of getting a second Sallie Mae MasterCard are done! I guess it's time to remove it from my wishlist.

On the plus side, Barclays also wrote, "A credit bureau was not used in making this determination", so my credit was not pulled (which makes sense, because I thought it was strange that I didn't have an inquiry alert on myFICO.

EDIT: On an even bigger plus side, with Barclays not pulling my credit for my second Sallie Mae application, I went ahead and proceeded with my Plan B of applying for a Wyndham Rewards Visa and was instantly approved for $2800!

Don't know how recent that is. I got the same letter when I applied for a second US Airways/Aviator card.

Wonder why the Wyndham CL's I have seen quite frankly suck.. They aren't a high limit card for a nice hotel

Lol. Sorry to scare everyone with the title of this thread. No nerfing for EXISTING accounts. But no, Nixon, I don't think this news is old. HeavenlyFlower was approved for a second Sallie Mae last month (or maybe it was early this month, I don't remember), so it's certainly a very recent change for Barclays.

I was one who got a second SM this month. My first was a platinum the second a world and I would guess you cannot have 2 worlds/2 platinums.

That was the rumor, but HeavenlyFlower was approved for two Sallie Mae World MasterCards.

Hmm.

Anyway, with the current legalese on Barclays app page, I won't be allowed to app for many years to come, or may be never at all.

Am glad I got in before they introduced the stringent eligibility criteria w.r.t residence. Not sure if they really check, but not worth taking the risk

I've seen this denial when I tried to reapply for the Extra Points card.....this is probably a normal thing with Barclays and some people are just being affected

Yes. Which was interesting because my original Sallie Mae application was a 7-10 day message, and my second was an instant denial.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think that my original Sallie Mae application from November resulting in a 7-10 day message would make a difference on this one 6 months later?

Doubt it's a recent official policy change.

I think a few just got lucky and snuck around the policies. I'm sure they never wanted people to have two.
