I used my AMEX charge card recently for a downpayment on a vehicle I was purchasing. Amex has an auto purchase program that allows you to use the card for downpayment purposes, AND you get the points!

I called to check if what I was charging would go through, and was told that I was trying to charge $1000 more than I was authorized. I was really surprised because it was a lot smaller than I expected. I was wondering what has been other people's experience in using their AMEX charge...especially after recently recieving it.

Im guessing it was a charge card and you checked the spending ability. and it was higher. if you had used revolver (amex) they let you charge the entire purchase of the car. not just down payment. if the dealer is willing. as the dealer does nt want to pay the swipe fee. but congrats on the new ride and the points you earned.

It was the AMEX Green Revolver, and the maximum they were willing to allow me to charge was $2600. Granted, I've only had the card for 2 months. I've had a strange experience with credit card issuers lately. I have no lates, no negatives at all on my CRs after rebuilding the last 2 years. And after paying off some credit cards, my scores have risen to what you see. But they don't correspond to the CLs I've been granted lately (well, except for for my Venture card!) Well, at least I got the $2600 in points. I'll pay it off and hopefully they will begin to raise that internal, undiscosed line.

It's a Charge card, like you said in the title. A revolver would have a set, stated limit.

And, yes, you can expect to be severely limited in charging capacity after only two months, so $2,600 sounds about right. That's a lot of spend in one month, to be paid off in 30 days.

Get past whatever bad items are on your reports (meaning they fall off) and you will see better limits. Rebuilding takes a long time.

Congratulations on the points! And continued success in the rebuilding!

Sorry - didn't mean it was a revolver. My point was I don't have ANY negatives at all, yet seems like I still have limits that others with similar scores and AAOA and income do not. For some reason I can't identify, I am rated lower in determining my initial CL and interest rates.

I do believe in the case of the AMEX Green is because it was so new. I expect that to increase, but it was still a surprise it was that low.

I got an Amex charge card, my only Amex, 4 years ago. At the time my credit history was only 3 years old with an AAoA of 2 years. My median monthly spend is only about 3k or so but the first month I charged 8k A year later I needed to make a 50k charge to avoid a wire. I did an online spend check and was approved. I've had a balance that exceeds all my revolver CLs put together. I don't know what amount they wouldn't approve as I haven't tested anything I didn't actually have a need to use.

Now I did have funds in the bank to cover the charges and it may be that Amex, like Central Credit (Vegas casino's cra) checks with your bank from time to time to get average balances or such. Whatever it is they do has made their card my goto card for larger purchases.
