My credit score is a 756 average and I am wanting to apply for the Barclaycard Rewards card. I have a Credit Karma account, and I do realize that information there isn't altogether accurate, but they have a gauge to determine your likelihood of being approved for particular credit cards. Although my credit score is rather decent, it is telling me my odds of being approved are Poor. Why would this be? Is my credit score too high for that card? Is that possible?

Well I think it's a bit odd. For cards that are in the "excellent credit" category, they give me an approval likelihood of "Very Good" , yet on the Barclaycard deemed for those with "Fair" credit, I am given a "Poor" chance. I'm confused.

After looking through all the available rewards cards, I decided that Groceries, Gas, and Utilities were pretty much my largest sum of purchases. So at 2% for all those categories I thought this card would be more beneficial for my needs than a Quicksilver 1.5% as my everyday rewards card. But now I'm a little gunshy to try to apply. Does excellent credit hurt your approval chances for lower tier cards?

Ah, so CK is assuming that I would apply through their site and wouldn't make as much commission from me applying for that particular card. So they try to discourage us from lower tier cards. Makes sense I guess. As far as credit line, I'm certain I would get a fairly decent starting line, and they do a credit line increase after 5 months anyway. I am just more concerned about being denied with a hard inquiry for a card I should easily qualify for.

Sandi, I think that's my problem. I have done extensive research trying to choose the right card(s) for me, and I think maybe I'm just digging a little TOO deep and making things more complicated for myself. I simply want (1 everyday rewards card) and (1 rotating category card) for the majority of my needs. But with all the factors involved it gets a bit convoluted. I'm simply not a 12 credit card kinda guy....I just need a couple to take advantage of cashback for my normal spending.

Whatever you do, do not rely on anything on CK when it comes to your 'odds' of applying for any credit card. Those recommendations or lack of are completely worthless and purely marketing as they get paid to promote certain cards. Instead pay attention to your Fico scores and research the criteria for approvals on any particular card. There is no such thing as your credit being too good for any card.

I appreciate all the responses on this. Definitely eases my mind a bit after hearing the feedback. With my credit scores around 756, only 1 inquiry from a year ago, no debt - I PIF every month, consistant 5% utilization, and a good job......I really see no reason why I would have any issues. That's why the CK thing had me confused, I thought surely you couldn't be turned down for your credit being "too good". Surely not....lol. Thanks again for the responses!

I don't understand the british barclay thing. I haven't seen any of their rewards cards to be way better than any of the others.

You can't go wrong with amex blue cash preferred 6% CB on groceries 3% on gas and whatever % on everything else, annual fee, yes, but if u spend over 55 a week its worth it. Now their promos are strange, they change quite a bit. I have seen $150 after spending $500. And $250 after $1000.

Would someone explain to me why Barclaycard is such a good thing? Not to sound offensive.

If you are doing research with those kind of scores. there are for sure many many better rewards cards than the barclays reward card. Paltry at best is phrase that comes to mine. i do agree ck is kinda usless with recommendations. but maybe they have a point. when it comes to that. if you are rebuilding . its excellent. beyond that someting that i will not earn a lot from for using it. if you must have a barclays card. consider the barclays ring. almost unmatched in low apr. and benefits. even though it is not a cash back. not sure what exactly you are looking for. 2 percent card maybe?

READ THIS BEFORE YOU APPLY!

OP, with your scores, you could easily apply for 3 cards and receive greater rewards than your current two card plan. I understand your desire is to only carry 2 cards, but consider to maximize your FICO scores, 3 is considered the minimum number.

First, if you're interested in Barclay, the Sallie Mae Mastercard will give you 5% gas, 5% groceries, and 5% bookstores (Amazon included). There is a $250 cap on each of the gas/groceries category, but unless you're spending $600 per month on groceries or gas, you will still beat out the Rewards card.

Next, the Citi Double Cash will give you 2% on EVERYTHING, which is greater or equal to the Rewards Card in all categories.

Finally, between rotating categories, the Discover It and the Freedom are your two choices. The Discover it is offering DOUBLE your cash back at the end of your 13th statement. The Freedom currently offers a $200 signup bonus. The It has an Amazon promotion which will give you a $100 Amazon gift card for your first purchase. It is up to you which card suits you best.

With all this said, if you still would like only 2 cards, I recommend the Sallie Mae Mastercard to be one of them if your gas and groceries indeed make up a large portion of your monthly spending.
