Discover doesn't like me... Excuses.

I got declined a CLI request because:

Too many new accounts - 3 new accounts they can see (not including theirs).

Too many inquiries in last 6 months - 3 on TU.

Increase in utilization from 3% to what my signature says.

I will probably max out the $500 a month limit they give me so I can get the quarterly rewards. They are so hard to spend my money with.

I'll max out the Amazon 5% but beyond that... I don't know what else they are worth it for?

I haven't had a problem with my Discover growing; the key is patience.

How long have you had it? In the first year to 18 months, mine didn't grow by any crazy amount. It took time for it to really take off.

Also, they like usage. If you are only showing marginal usage, you're less likely to see CLIs.

It's 3 months old. Usage is about 60% of $500 CL. I PIF all my credit cards.

I'm putting about 4k a month through AMEX. My EDP CL is $21k.

Sorry to hear all the problems. The fact you have a $500 limit is tell tale sign. That they like you. It's not you per sy but your profile. That's the we will approve you limit. But need time for you to grow. I would. Not worry of making it with a limit like that use it. Pay and repeat. In a year or more. As your profile grows. So will the card. There is a reason they gave you 500 limit. Even if we nor you know it. The other reasons are what affected your fico score. Patience. I'm sure you hear us preach that. But it's the only thing you can do with credit. Just thinking 2 years ago. I was in 500s fico. Now all negatives are gone. Scores rising. And got every card I want. Discover started at 2500. Shocker at time. Now 7500. But it did not happen in 3 months. Regardless of my spend.

My biggest worry is I need it to be a couple of thousand by beginning of next summer. If I can't use it in my Japan trip then after the 12 month double bonus it becomes less valuable to me.

It is weird that I have 5 cards with my limits in order of 21k, 15.75k, 2.15k and 0.5k Discover plus a NPSL.

Discover isn't very usable in Europe since diners club isn't very accepted.

There's still a year away. It's only been 3 months with your Discover. Give it time. You will likely get an increase by next summer.

I would advise bringing a Visa card to Japan because (1) it may or may not work on the JCB network (merchants actually have to sign up for that and not sure how many have) and (2) you might get some stubborn Japanese clerk who will refuse to try the card if they don't recognize it.

But for most everday purchases, I highly recommend cash to be honest. A Visa card is fine for your hotel (all big hotel chains will take cards) and maybe bigger restaurants/department stores. Using non-Japan issued cards in Japan tends to be a hassle.

Agree boss just got back from Japan and all though they are a very technology driven society, cash was king over credit over there. He isn't big into CC at all, but that is one point he bitched about regarding the trip to have to carry cash
