Chase Ritz card compromised

Got an alert first thing this morning for a $15.75 charge from gosq.com, which apparently is tied to the Square Reader. Checked my Chase account and they had already reversed the charge. A few minutes later get another alert for a $55.00 for SQ 'Steve Wichman', another attempt at a charge on a Square Reader. Immediately got a text from Chase asking if this was a legitimate charge and when I replied 'no', I was prompted to call in. After series of verification questions, very nice CSR told me new cards will be sent UPS and I should receive them tomorrow along with return envelopes to send the current metal cards back. About 30 seconds after the call ended, received notice that Apple Pay was already updated with new account.

This is my first fraudulent charge and I'd have to guess that somehow the card was cloned because I'm pretty sure that the card has to be inserted into the Square Reader for barges to occur. I last used the card online to buy AA gift cards two days ago and last physical use of the card was at a restaurant in Vegas a month and half ago. Used it there several times so I'm guessing that's where it was compromised.

Glad that Chase caught these instantly and hope that's the end of my problems though it does seem that Chase (going by reports here) has more of these than other cc companies.

The card doesn't have to be physically present to be charged to Square.

I used to use it at my last workplace and you can just type in the info.

But regardless, I am glad they sorted it for you! It's always scary when you see charges like that.

Chase's 'elite cards' customer service is second to none.

I had the same issue yesterday with my Freedom card, but the charge was $1,000 at an online hardware store. I don't think there's anything to worry about, Chase is definitely good at handling these issues. I had the same thing happen with my Apple Pay and I was very impressed. Just in case I have any issues with this in the future, I messaged them to mail me all of the information about the transaction and what they did about it . That's probably not necessary, but it might come in handy later.

For posted charges on your account, you should be able to click the "+" sign and it'll tell you if the charge was online/telephone/mail order.

Sorry your card was compromised but at least Chase is handling it very well for you!

For posted charges on your account, you should be able to click the "+" sign and it'll tell you if the charge was online/telephone/mail order.

The fraudulent charges never went past 'pending'

Hey there,

last week I got a $2.20 SQ charge, then immediately after, they made a purchase via Walmart for $733. This was on my CSP though. They had my address and all. I thought maybe a restraunt that I have deliver to me may have been compromised or something of the like. The shipping address was local but not my address.

Also if you can, please report this to SQ as well so they have the chance to track and disable the account. I find it odd that SQ makes it this easy for anyone apparently to become a member. IDK how they are setup but I hope they at least do credit checks at the minimal for new accounts.

They don't do credit checks. You have to give your SSN, so they are trying to prevent fraud. I'm sure they'll shut the merchant's account down when they are alerted to this.

My Ritz card was compromised too in the past month. I had just gotten the plastic Ritz too that I actually liked more.

I have a Square. They do a SP to verify identity. Depending on your type of business, they may do a more thorough check on you. I suspect it may be an unscrupulous employee of a legitimate business; when I worked fraud for a big name CCC we flagged a card that refunds but no charges to refund against.

Turns out, a "trusted" employee with access to the business owner's bank accounts was embezzling thousands of dollars a month and the owner didn't even know about it.

I doubt it. Mine had an individuals name on it SQ*Nael Said. The OP also had an individuals name.

A trend to look out for I think.

You can choose/edit what name shows up on customer statements if you have owner level access.

I had my CSP compromised a few months ago... Same thing, Chase saw the fraudulent activity and sent me a text, then when I confirmed, they said to call in... Reissued the card, sent it UPS. Maybe they like those heavy metal cards ;(

No. they will not shut the merchants account. Dont assume because it came thru the merchant that the merchant is the one commiting fraud. i have had square many years now. since 2011. and we take phone orders, internet orders and direct charge. people can call in with all type of credit card numbers. generally something is off which triggers the fraud alert. ie. the card not present. but then the cvv is different or the billing zip is different. so of course the merchant will not be punished for something like this. this is exactly why they have the different levels of security. to protect them selves as well as the merchant. but you can beleive they are not in it to protect you. as it is their money to began with. and you are not liable. So there will be investigation. but back to what i said. they will not shut merchant down for a few fraudulent transactions. considering Most merchants run thousands of transactions with on incident.

Sucks to be violated or have that feeling.. Always curious who wrote down your Card number what restraurant emplyee etc would do that is usually my thought.. Glad they caught it and refunded you the amount already and sure you will have a new card tomorrow or the next day

Why is it that everytime I hear about someone's card being compromised it's a Chase card? I know it can happen with any card, but it just seems weird that it happen so frequently with Chase.

My Marriott and Ritz cards have both been used fraudulently and Chase really is the best at this in my opinion. Their customer service is top notch in my opinion, especially with one of their more expensive cards like ritz/Pd.
