Diners Club Dispute Process

Does anybody have any experience with disputing a charge with Diners Club? Very long story short, the dealership accepted credit cards for down payment so figured I might as well get the points (and as it turns out protection). I ended up returning the car, which was an ugly process and the dealership hasn't reversed the charge even though they agreed to. I opened a dispute with Diners Club so hopefully it will work out on that end rather than me going back to the dealership and wasting more time.

I don't have any knowledge on this but did some googling. Only found stories for disputing a charge with DC from 2002. The story just mentioned it was a long process of 6+ weeks for them. But that is from 2002.

I would assume like any lender it shouldn't be an issue, they will probably do their normal investigation and what not.

Thanks Skye. I didn't google (doh!) it yet. Interestingly, the first CSR I spoke to told me I couldn't dispute it since I didn't purchase the full price of the car on their card. Then he said I needed to wait 30 days from the date I returned it. just about lost it, but fortunately when I called back a day later and explained the entire situation from start to finish they opened a dispute.

Taxi, it was the first time this happened to me. Almost 3 weeks later they wanted to change the terms. Of note, I used Penfed car buying service and the Dealership quoted me a much lower price, but honored it, plus I had a $3500 incentive. So out the door the car was around $10k under sticker price. I think they felt ripped off, but that discussion should have happened before I left the lot!

wow 10k below sticker. so you outgunned a shady salesman. hehehe. then they wanted to change all. i would have taken it back as well. im car shopping right now. and i know on the used cars they have at least 40% markup. Looking at 2012 Benz e350. im not paying a dime over $22k. hehehe. but for another thread. im sure Diners will refund. just will take them some time. im surprised the dealer took so long to get you your money back. If they ever want to do business with you again.

So did you actually use the PenFed car buying service, or that was one of the quotes and the dealer had a different qoute?

NRB, that was the quote through Penfed, to clarify I didn't finance it through Penfed. I should have known something was fishy when the salesman tried to give me a higher price than what he quoted me the day before.

Taxi, it was actually for a 2016 Mercedes E550 coupe (love that V8!!). When I went back they said "let's get you financed for a rebuilder car!" What the heck?!?! I have a 2014 Touareg financed at 1.9% through Penfed. I decided I'll just drive it for a few more years. Ive. filed a BBB complaint and am preparing a complaint to the CA Consumer Protection Bureau against the dealerships sales practices.

Hopefully Diners Club comes through and processes the dispute. They told me I'm not responsible for any minimum payment or finance charges while the dispute is investigated.

This is actually a fairly common dispute for Visa/MC, at least I have seen it a handful of times at my job. In one statement that the cardholder gave us the dealership told him: "You are not getting your 1k back. Sue us." I have seen some people win, some people lose... it all depends on how strong the cardholder's case is. I wonder if Diners Club has the same dispute reasons codes as Visa and MC.

Ya curious what they tried to change on the terms.. funny you had the vehicle 3 weeks, sure they weren't happy with that return due to the miles, they are going to have to discount it or find a dumb buyer and get full value that way or close. think they would of done anything they could of to keep you in that car, last thing a dealer wants is a car back!

One thing I have learned buying many many cars.. car dealers are not your friends

LOL I know you are somehow in car the business, not quite sure what you do and honestly I would love to deal with you on my next car purchase/lease . Can tell your character by your posts and you are an honest person. I think you have eluded to this before in another post or two

I had the old 09 CLK AMG 63 and loved it back two cars ago! basically the old E550 on steroids

No, I'm not now in the car business. Was in it for long time but that was awhile ago and I was a SM or GSM most of the time. Now I'm in different type of sales with much better hours and working conditions :-)

There Are a lot of dishonest car dealers but there also are plenty that try to operate honestly. There often is a lot of misunderstanding on both sides and often customers have a misperception of how much money is being made. It's a unique process because it's about the only item we ever buy where people think they have a right to know exactly what the dealership paid for the car. Try go buy your next dress shirt and tell them 'hey, I want to give you 75 cents more than you paid for it' :-)

Dont want to go too far off topic here and would love to know what terms changed that made thrm request the car be brought back after 3 weeks.
