I've gotta say, Ring is pretty awesome.

If I weren't 'cultivating' to get ready for a Sallie Mae app in the Spring, I would be jumping on Ring in a heartbeat. It's always nice to have a low APR card in the back pocket for 'just-in-case'.

Your personal info is encrypted on the chip. More difficult to get your information than having a strip where a card reader can be placed into the track that you swipe it in.

They are looking to make the whole Barclay line into chip cards. Edit: Oops, read that wrong. The Ring and Arrival are 2 different cards. The Ring is a low APR card but no points or cash back.

If all these chip cards default to swipe and sig, how is that any more effective? Does it only have a chip and no stripe?

Some cards are chip and PIN. You have to enter a PIN that has to match the PIN embedded in the chip. Anyone can forge your signature. It is more difficult to guess the PIN.

I know how they are supposed to work, but all the ones I have always default to swipe. I think the only place I have had to insert the card was Walmart. I was never really worried about my info getting stolen there though lol. Even then, even though my card has a PIN, it didnt ask for it. Everywhere else I have used it still uses the old swipe method. Am I just in an area that is behind the times or something?

The US is behind the times. Chip technology has been used in Europe for about a decade. A lot of places like train ticket kiosks only take chip cards so for now they are only useful to us if we travel abroad.

Completely agree. If only Barclay were to offer the Ring with Chip/PIN... but then again, if they did, their servers would likely crash from all the folks that would be applying for it.

At my local Target Express I'm required to insert my chip card. However, I'm not required to enter my PIN, nor do I have to sign.

Certain places i swipe my card and dont have to sign if it is under a certain amount. like $25, maybe more. I can't remember.

just got back from Europe and while i was there my chip/pin cards defaulted to chip/sig. the only time i used pin was parking and tolls. i think their machines read it as a U.S. card and they default to sig or something.

ehh, doesn't matter anyway, scammers will beat it somehow anyway or just keep hacking accounts to get the info.

i haven't had a fraudulent charge yet and hope to keep it that way.

Ring and my Discover IT are the only cards I have that don't have a chip. Discover sent me an e-mail the other day saying I will be getting a chip card soon though.

By the time chip and pin is broadly used, it will be too late. Hacks against it will be rampant. Technology has to constantly evolve or else hackers will learn it and defeat it. Credit card tp

Come October you should see more merchants turning on their chip readers, that's when the liability shift will occur. Home Depot also turned on their chip readers not too long ago.

I'm a bit offput almost all U.S. banks chose C+S over C+P priority but they make so much in interest & fees that fraud costs don't even register on their radar. In Europe & elsewhere banks don't make nearly as much on cards so for them fraud prevention is an extremely high priority; any fraud related losses are definitely felt.
