Venture Purchase Eraser

I've got a question about the purchase eraser.

I initially accessed it using the iPhone app. In order to get the 40k bonus points, I made $3k worth of purchases of which about $170-180 was travels. So I kept redeeming those that got posted. So far so good.

So I have some purchases that were pending and I could still erase them. I did ; but when they got posted they were again available for erasing. So I erased again.

Ok, then I moved on to the desktop portal. Oddly, all those purchases that I erased on iPhone were still there. Mind you, I saw credits post for all those erasing. Anyway, I started erasing. So I erased a bunch of transactions and I refreshed the page, came back from the home page and found that those transactions were back, again.

So now I've used up 46k points erasing $180 worth of travel. All of them posted as reward redemption at the 1:1c rate. Is this normal? Will they take my points back?

I'm not going to ask this to CSR because (a) they won't understand and (b) it might be a good thing that I could get all my points redeemed without spending extra on travel.

Yes but did I need to make $400 in travel purchase? Because I could redeem against the same purchases multiple times.

I doubt that's what they intend, but I've read here about people redeeming more than twice for the same travel.

If this is how it works then it's no longer a restricted 2% Cashback, it's unrestricted. Just that I need one travel purchase against which I can redeem all my points however many times I want.

but you said you only got $180 worth of credit but used 46k points... that means you didn't get 2x credit for them being travel. they just exchanged as regular purchases it sounds like.

@Creditaddict, I'll clarify. I used those points to redeem against the same purchases over and over. So I got $460 worth in cash back but I didn't make so much of travel purchase. And I didn't redeem for non-travel.

I was able to do this as well with my venture points. Used them all on the same purchase multiple times. Let me do it 3 times on same transaction!

Me too, I did the same thing with my Venture purchases. I hope it's not a glitch, I like it!

Basically you erased the purchases more than once using your miles. because you kept seeing them either posted or pending. The key is that you redeemed miles more than once for the same purchase so im sure cap one will refund those miles. I just always wait until the Pending charges actually post before trying to erase. keep us posted what happens. I still have about 5 days to come up with my Spend. Im about $1400 short at the moment. im going to buy some Gift Cards now, and also will pay some bills tomorrow in order to make the bonus spend. I will erase all of this before my next statement cuts or pay off what i owe before then. Thanks for the heads up, as i don't want to make the same mistake.

@taxi, it didn't matter whether the charges posted or not. I could redeem the same transaction twice or more times, on the desktop. All the redemptions posted as Cashback, but I didn't need to make that much purchase in travel. I'll keep you posted on whether Cap One claws back on the points and asks me to make some more travel purchases to redeem them against.

I did mine a month or so ago, I've had a statement cut since then and it's all good. When I did it, my travel expenses had posted, I used the purchase eraser for those.. waited a week or 2, tried it again on the same travel expense and it went through again. Gave me the credit for it 1-2 days later. Like I said that was over a month ago, I've had a statement cut since then and not a word from them yet. I guess I can wait to see what happens next statement, but I think if there was going to be an issue it would have presented itself last statement. If anything changes I'll definitely report back.

@JustMe3, Thanks for that info. Hopefully I'll get a statement cut and Cap One won't mind. This makes it a pretty good 2% straight card wherever Discover won't work.

It doesn't mean it's unrestricted, merely a glitch...could save yourself headache by just obtaining an unrestricted card and not having to care if/when they fix this. The Venture is intended to give credit at full value for travel purchases. Anything else is a mistake/glitch.

Generally I agree with your assessment of this card but that isn't exactly true. You can redeem for gift cards and get full value. Nothing related to travel.

True, I was saying as far as crediting actual purchases, travel is the intended way to get your full percent. So while the glitch may allow otherwise, I fail to see why one wouldn't just get an unrestricted card and save themselves from having to wonder if it's going to "work". To each their own.
