Cap 1 not accepted?

I went to a restaurant tonight and was surprised/confused when my server brought back my card and told me they don't accept Capital One cards. Whaaaaaaaaaat?! I've only ever heard of that happening with Amex. Thankfully I had my debit card on me because the only cards I have in my wallet are Cap One (Venture and QS) and store cards, and I doubt they accept J. Crew or Victoria's Secret. :/ How common is this?

Is your card by any chance a Venture?

I've read tales of this happening when the Visa/Mastercard ensignia is on the back of the card instead of the 'usual' place on the front.

Apparently some cashiers don't bother to turn the card over, and just see "Capital One" on the front (or Citi, for the Double-Cash card) and assume they aren't supposed to take it since the familiar emblem isn't on the bottom right hand corner.

If it happens again, I would *insist* on them taking the card - I would start by having them look at the back. Actually, I'm not one to complain, but this is one of the few times I would ask for a manager. It's not my job to educate cashiers/servers about what payment types their own business accepts, and the manager needs to know there's a training opportunity.

Edit: Just re-read in your original post that your Capital One cards are Venture and QS... was it the Venture you had the problem with?

Never had a Cap 1 card, but your server probably was mistaken. UncleB's post explains what likely happened. Next time, have them flip the card and show them it is a Visa/MC issued by Cap 1 and not a "Cap 1" network card. Also, generally speaking if a business accepts 1 Visa card, they have to accept ALL Visa cards. Same applies for MasterCard. Unless they don't accept the network your Cap1 card uses, they can't selectively not accept the card.

to go on what's previously stated, if they take visa they have to take all visas no matter what. you should have told them to run it and try. odds are they didn't even attempt

Exactly you take all or none. Don't ,tater who issues it. Should have asked for manager. Amex is issuer. As well as network. Not like cap one. They are just bank.

Yes it was. My server was pretty inept all around, so it should've occcurred to me that the numbers being on a different side might be an issue. But seriously everyone else just turns it around to see. smh

I'm surprised your server didn't even try the card.

When I was a cashier, I was taught to always swipe the card, no matter what. When I worked at Nordstrom, we had some European tourists who tried to pay with their Maestro cards and I knew that we couldn't take those but I still swiped them anyway. (And got a card type not recognized) You would think they would at least try it! I also always looked at both sides of the card too (to check for a signature and the payment network).

I know of a bakery nearby where the owner got into a fight with Capital One and now they refuse to accept them. Doesn't matter if it's Visa or MC.

Goodness. Turn the card over. lol!

I sort of had that problem when I used my Chase United. The cashier didn't even bother to look on the back. Asked me what type of card was it and proceeded to hand it back until I told her to flip it over.

Similar thing happened to me at the nail salon. Tried an Amex they said only Visa or MC. Gave them my Venture and she still goes "Visa or Mastercard" her thumb was over the Visa logo -_____-

Yes, and to get The Rest Of The Story about whether the bakery had the issue with personal Capital One cards that they had taken out as their own credit cards? Or some dispute from a Capital One cardholder that they got charged for a bakers dozen as 13 donuts instead of just 12 donuts plus one free? Because there are not many situations where the merchant interacts directly with any bank other than their funding / merchant bank on the payment network.

Maybe this depends on your business, but all of our disputes (V/MC/D) come through our Merchant accounts (payment processors); we never deal directly with the bank (except for Amex; those come separately and we do respond to them directly). Wouldn't be such a bad thing except when the banks send letters of cancellations to our merchatns and they refuse to pass them along to us so we get charged a chargeback fee and they can make some extra money.

My guess is the bakery owner had some personal issue with Cap1? I want to hear the rest of the story too! But I wonder if refusing Cap1 cards is a violation of the V/MC merchant agreement?

I wonder that too. AFAIK, if you take Visa, you have to accept ALL visas no matter what.
