Places that take only Mastercard

Everything I find out there posing this question is really outdated. I ask because I only have one Mastercard, and I'm thinking about closing it.

Any places you've seen that take only Mastercard (and not Visa)? Feel free to include international experiences.

what visa do you have? some financial institutions will give you the same card on both networks

From an international experience, and it depends on where you're going, I found that MC was more globally accepted. However, I always took EMV/no FTF cards with all the 3 networks (V/MC/AX) just in case one network was not accepted.

Yes! I checked the CC logos at checkout and saw all the big ones except Amex.

wait just a second... I think I remember that its either the self check out, or the regular check out lanes, only take the Sams or MC, but the other one does take all... I just cant remeber which one does!

Where the heck are you going that they dont take MC? I mean, Ive been a lot of places that look at me like im nuts when I pull out a credit card, but thats a different story alltogether..

All the Sam's Clubs I've been to only take Mastercard and Discover (along with their own PLCC) in the store - no Visa credit cards.

If you have a Visa debit card, you can use it as long as you use your PIN, since it's not run over the credit network.

This being said, if you order from samsclub.com, you can use Visa credit, as well as Amex.

I'd keep the MC or at least get a different MC and have at least both a Visa and MC esp. for int'l travel. Having said that, I think I've seen maybe one place in all these years that takes only Visa but not MC (and vice versa). Heck, while in eastern Europe I've even seen a place that only takes Discover*, but those are exceptions rather than rules in my experience.

*The country in question actually has a local processing network which has a deal with Discover so they're accepted in each others' networks (I think Discover has a similar deal with the Chinese UnionPay and some other systems).

Why are you looking for places that ONLY take MasterCard? Most places that accept visa will also accept MasterCard.

99% of the time Visa and MC are interchangeable as far as acceptance. Yes, Sam's is one exception, but unless you shop there, it's nothing worth worrying about. If one has a Visa instead of a MC, they are extremely unlikely to run into any problems in the real world.

The OP is considering closing his/her only MasterCard, and is trying to find out if there are any merchants where using a MasterCard is required.

So far all we've come up with (domestically) is Sam's Club, which (in most cases) only accepts MasterCard and Discover.

As a side-note, Costco only accepts Amex, and in the near future will only accept Visa (I'm assuming in addition to debit of any brand). Also, if one is interested in traveling to the Olympics, I believe the venues there will only accept Visa as well (due to sponsorship).

These are currently the only 'outliers' I'm aware of at this time.

It has been a very long time since I encountered a business that would only accept MC payments and not Visa (or viceversa).

I live in MD and very often I run into a merchant that would only accept CC payment for $10 and above

For online shopping at costo, you can use any issuer. If you do not have an AMEX in store, believe they take any depit card.

Made a purchase online using a MC and returned it in store. They could not credit my MC. Paid me 1100 in 20s

If I remember correctly, the DMV in Miami, FL, only takes MC.

+1 Europe and Asia. Mostly mastercard. But visa strong as well in Asia.

thanks for the clarification... It was still pretty early when I opened the thread. Either way, there's going to be very few places that accept only MC. Most places equally accept visa and MC.

Maybe of no concern, but my university only took mc for tuition. Not sure how widespread this is at colleges.
