throughout the years i had 4 CC numbers stolen... all chase cards. the first 3 times i figured maybe someone at a restaurant or a supply sotre copied the info on the card. or maybe some wedsite like rakuten or alibaba leaked it. but i didn't really pay any attention to it. i got credits for the fraudulent charges and proceeded to change the account info at all the websites where i buy stuff.

well, the 4th time it happened was on my chase ink bold card 3 days ago. but here is the strange thing. i never actually used the card. i activated the replacement card i got from the last time it happened back in june over the phone. the card never left the house. i never updated any billing info. i didn't have to make any work related purchases on own card since then. all i did was activate it and stuffed it back in the anvelope in came in and threw in with my other financial paper work. not sure what to assume at this point.

I can understand your reasoning. it's scary especially 4 times with one company and a card you haven't yet used. but i seriously doubt that employees are leaking your info. this isn't meant to be a joke but do you have any crazy ex partners in your life?

While I'm not a conspiracy theorists, I'm wondering the same thing.

In 20 years of using CCs, I've NEVER had a CC # compromised or experienced a fraudulent charge, until my Chase Ink. About 2 months ago, I experienced my very first fraudulent charge; an Ink Plus hardly ever used compromised. About 6 months ago, my business Partner had her Ink Plus, also hardly ever used, compromised. Both cards had been sock drawered for about 10 months.

Of course, as they say, "correlation doesn't imply causation," but if the incidents of Chase cards compromised are occuring at the rate of 2 or 3 standard deviations above industry norms, they should start investigating the matter more closely.

There have been cases of such bad apples employed at banks and they have been eventually caught and prosecuted so it is possible. Its also possilble that a hacker has broken into their system and stolen the information and they could be aware or not aware of it having happened.

There are some very intelligent/slick people out there in the world and I would not be surprised if a Chase employee(s) were doing some of the dirt. It's really not that inconceivable. Hell, the biggest state government fraud attack in my neck of the woods was employee related. Yeah, I know that hackers can do a lot with electronic devices but some of the best crooks actually work in the target zones.
I wouldn't be surprised. I'm young, but I'm a very private person, and with the disproportionate amount of effort I take into protecting myself, I don't think I'm at a particularly high risk of identity theft.

I had my Freedom compromised a few weeks ago, Chase was on top of it. Okay, I can see that happening. After the ordeal, I updated my Slate card as well so that I could make sure that, if it was someone that knew me, they wouldn't get far. Never took this new card out of my safe.

Lo and behold, a week ago a charge is made in my Slate, and the charge goes through because they knew the new numbers. How does this happen? This is all within the frame of two months. Call it the paranoia in me (which I, admittedly, have a lot of), but it also makes me skeptical.

The banks usually let me know before I even notice, and if I do notice I just call them up. I never take my debit card anywhere, so I don't worry too much about my bank accounts. Credit cards, go crazy with, it'll all be taken care of in a day.

I will say, one of the reasons I often find myself using my ritz card is because of the customer service for this very reason.
