Agree with finstar. Citi just tends to be 'case by case" with regard to HP/SP on CLIs or reallocations. They don't seem to have much of a set in stone policy on it.

I will say that more people report HPs than not on reallocations, whereas CLIs seem to be SP more often.

Glad you accomplished what you wanted without a HP, though

These last few days I've decided to shred several credit cards for the sake if simplifying management of them. I found out today that upon calling to cancel two different citi cards I had the ability to move the line over WITHOUT a hard pull. It was interesting because the option was not necessarily offered... I asked about potentially keeping part of my credit line and thats when I discovered it was an option. As part of the disclosure they account supervisor explicitly stated there would be no hard pull to process the request. Just wanted to let yall know!

While your experience provides some good data points, this is not always the case. The HP varies on a case by case basis to include account history (much like whe an individual is eligible for SP CLI vs HP), it also depends on the product and overall relationship. Citi hasn't changed their reallocation policies but folks also need to be aware that your situation is not set in stone for all cardholders.

I would point out that OP did close some of his citi cards, which was the reason, if not the entire reason, why citi allowed transferring the CL.
If OP simply requested CL consolidation without closing any card, I doubt citi would do it so painlessly without a HP.

I agree the fact that OP was closing cards probably made things easier. Merely moving limits around with Citi without closing a card is usually reported as being a HP.

Also I had tried this to close Simplicity and move limit over...they wanted HP to do a CLI,then close Simpl. I wasn't willing to take a 3rd HP in a mth to do that... so I just went ahead and closed Citi as it wasn't any use to me anyway....

* Edit

closed Simplicity
