The Perks+ seems to be just a lesser version of Flexperks (being as though it has no fee). I imagine $49 is not terribly hard to justify. The Flexperks Amex has the advantage of 2x dining which the Visa doesn't have. Anyway, the Flexperks is geared towards travel redemptions and that is how you get the most value. You can redeem for statement credits at full 1% value which is a bonus, but there's little point in paying a fee if you are just using it that way.

I'd vote for Cash+, depending on your spending habits. With the 25% bonus, you'd be getting a decent return across the board if the 5% and 2% categories suit you.

I don't have any experience with US Bank but Cash+ seems pretty sweet if the 5% categories will work for you. A lot of people here recommend freezing IDA/ARS (two lesser known credit bureaus) before applying. I think US Bank is pretty conservative/strict with underwriting and your app will most likelly go to 7-10 manual processing. Good luck!

I've got a mortgage through US Bank, and they called me in 2009 to give me a CC, an early version of a 1% Perks card, that evolved into a Cash Rewards 1% card. I used that card for literally everything, because I had large open balances on all my other cards. I especially carried balances on the Cash Rewards card, so it was definitely getting a lot of swipes, and paying interest at 15%.

Then they called me again in 2013 to give me the Cash+ card. Looking through my Cash Rewards file a few weeks ago, and I saw that they also sent me a mailer when the Cash+ first came out. I guess I didn't reply fast enough so they called me.

I recently PC'd the first card, the Cash Rewards, into my Second Cash+ card. This is sweet because now I've got four 5% categories I can choose. Fast Food, Telecom (land line and cellphone both work for me), Sporting Goods stores, and Electronics stores. Department stores are also available, but not for Q4 since Discover is already there.

You should apply for the Cash+ first. I've never blocked IDA/ARS or whatever it is they check, never frozen any credit reports either for that matter. They will review your file, and they might get you the Cash+, or they might get you the CashRewards card. IF they give you the Cash Rewards card, just accept that, use it regularly, and then you will start buildling your borrowing relationship with US Bank.

Less than a year after I got the first card, I got a large automated CLI. It is now $14k

Less than a year after getting the Cash Plus, it went from $8,500 limit to $13,500 limit, with light usage.

Less than a year after getting the US Bank Fred Meyer card, they just gave me a bump from $10,000 to $14,000. So I'm now at $41,500 of credit card limits with US Bank.

When I applied for the Travel Rewards VISA in summer 2014, they gave me a $17k limit to start. I figured out that I wasn't going to be able to make use of the points, the AF is too steep and my spending is too dispersed, and it did not have a EMV PIN, one of the main purposes I thought the card had, so I closed that one after just a few months.

The main point is, apply for at least one card with US Bank, the Cash+ is best to reach for, and see what they respond with. Let the underwriting work through, take whatever they give you, then show usage on the card. As you build a relationship with US Bank, you will have access to all their cards, including automated CLI, eventually.

Good luck!

It's not that bad. It's actually cheaper than a Venture, with the potential for a higher redemption value. But I would only recommend it for someone interested in travel of course, and it doesn't have the transfer partners etc. Still, people rave about the Venture which is also fixed value, and technically Flexperks has potential for higher value. (Of course, I don't have a flexperks so in practice I don't know how often you get more than 1 cent per point, but at least they don't nerf you on non-travel redemptions).

I vote for cash+ too.
Flexperks card are very complicated and confused on both earning and spending end, double points on certain category you spend most each month and points worth 1.5~2 cent depending on the tickets price just happen to be a round number or not.
Way too much hassle to deal with it.
I applied Club Carlson Premier visa last year, it was a great card as you get last night free make it essentially b1g1 deal, but they nerf this benefit, it became a soso card, 85K signing bonus is still not bad.

Here are my options:

-Cash + Visa Signature (no annual fee)

-Perks + Visa (no annual fee)

-FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature ($49 annual fee)

Whichever card I choose would get 25% bonus rewards. I assume that they use the same underwriting criteria for employees.

In addition to the cards in my signature below, I have a car loan from Chase bank opened in December 2014, and two student loans that I'm currently paying. As of today, here are my inquiries:

Equifax: 12/2013, 5/2014, 5/2014, 7/2014, 3/2015, 6/2015

Experian: 12/2013, 3/2014, 8/2014, 11/2014

TransUnion: 12/2013, 3/2014, 5/2014, 12/2014, 12/2014, 1/2015

Am I likely to qualify for any of these cards? How long should I wait before I am more likely to qualify? Are the rewards easy to use? I've never dealt with points cards before. Would the annual fee be worth it on the FlexPerks card, and if it is, does it make more sense to get the AmEx FlexPerks card (same annual fee as the Visa) without the 25% employee bonus? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Welcome to US Bank! Are you working in a branch? I just started here last month too, but I work at the Fargo Service Center.

A quick note on the 25% bonus - it only applies to the base 1%/1 point you get on everything. You don't get the 25% bonus on the accelerated categories. ( I wish you could!) They do have to use the same underwriting for employees - the Fair Credit Lending Act prohibits anyone from special considerations when being approved for credit.

It's up to you to look at where your spending is and what you want to redeem your rewards for in order to determine a perfect fit card for you. As a reminder with the Flexperks cards also, when you spend 24K on the card each year, you get 3,500 bonus points which can be used to pay for the annual fee - essentially giving you a travel card with bonus categories for free, as long as you make it your main spending card (or spend ALOT of money on all your credit cards )

With everything approval odds are YMMV, but if you have a clean and somewhat decent length of history, there should be no problem in getting any of the above cards.

They won't even pre-qualify me for that!

I just tried it after you mentioned this, and yeah, now I don't even get that offer. They must want nothing to do with me, lol

Edit: Just tried my mom's info - nothing for her either. All her scores are 760+, no baddies, and less than 3% utilization. Maybe the pre-qual is broken.

I just tried it as well, and I'm getting " we have no offers for you"...lol

In the past, 3,500 points may be used to redeem for the $49 fee on the Flexperks. Anyone know if this is still the case?

Thanks!

The brochure they send along with the card states that you can pay the AF with 3,500 points.

They gave me 20,000 points for a $500 spend, I assume because of being an established customer.. For all the places I travel, tickets are just under $400 so there is little waste of points due their tiered system for airline tickets.

Also note the US Bank is very gererous with its established customers as far as approvals.
